A hot-tempered crltle indignantly asks "Don't you know that the minis ters who are against you carry with them the Individual support of their church membership?" It Is our knowledge that this Is not the case that gives us strength. Mr Landen, Mr. Dllworth, and Mr. Staver represent by no means the rank and file of the Presbyterian, Methodist, or Congregational churches, as may be seen from the Interviews we have pub lished in this paper. They are gentlemen whose words bear weight in the com munity, who speak In a pure and hon est manner, but who, we submit, are units among their fellow citizens and nothing more, In a crisis of this char acter. If after their first spasmodic gasp of Indignation at our course, they would act, do something, call meetings, keep up the flame, and work as if they felt and knew there was some feeling In them that had to find its outlet In ac tion, then indeed each of them could be counted as a hundred. But we pro test that they are not the church, that they do not stand for others, and that on this question they are simply hon orable Individual opponents, with a mistaken appreciation of the laws of religion and humanity, and a blind faith in their own doctrine that Is lead ing them Into unconscious collusion with a low class of thieves. They protest too much. The leading vein of argument running - through their expressed ideas Is "shame on the community that cannot enforce Its stat ute laws." Now are not these gentle men portions of the community? Will 'they deny that they, In common with everybody else, have known ever slnoe the first week of their lives in this city, that the town Is overrun with gambling dens and hells for men and boys? We will forfeit five hundred dollars today to any charity they like to. name if either Mr. Landen or Mr Dllworth will write and tell us that he has not known all along of this demoralising state of affairs. And what have they done to stop it? They knew of the state law, they knew of the hellish transactions that disgrace this city daily, And yet, what have they done? Absolutely nothing. They, the leaders of public morals, of relig ious thought and training In the com munity, have stood by Idly without a sign of action. And still they appear In public print today and ask with a pitiful show of weakness: "Why have not the statute laws been enforced! Shame on the community that cannot enforce them!" How can you admonish and upbraid your fellow citizens for not having done what you yourselves have not had the courage to attempt? And you, with all the weight and dignity lent you by your profession at your back, had ten times more power to do It than other men possessed. Wake up to the truth of this Ques tion. Throw off the supposition that this thing can be absolutely abolished, when you own inaction in the past Is the strongest proof against your state ment. Try to mix the leaven of com man sense with your mass of theoret ical Impracticability. Only a little of Eor the Next Thirty Days, To meet imperative demands, I will offer at such low pricos on install ments, with easy payments, that it, for your own Bible tells us: "a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump." The gambling degrading curse, but one which has withstood all effort to uproot it, let It, therefore, be eontrolled and confined within the narrowest possible limits. It is Bismarck's birthday tomorrow and it is likely there will be more sig nificance than ever before) attending Its celebration this year. William and his Caprlvi have got the empire Into a scrape over the army bill. First, they tried tinkering the foreign policy and managed to offend Russia and cause the French and Russians to become great friends. Then the alliance of Germany, Austria and Italy has been weakened by a series of follies; and William had the littleness to interfere to prevent the reception of Bismarck in Vienna that the court would have been glad to give him. Between France and Russia, Germany has asked for more soldiers, and the demand for them has been 'managed In a defeat of the imperial policy. The truth la, the em pire is shaken because the emperor'i vanity could not permit the presence of the overshadowing figure of the man who made the empire, and to whom royalties are puppets. It it unjust for us to declare that when three clergymen attempt to touch I a timid wag tit question which Is at the bottom of our present municipal discontent, they are so wedded to tho established order, and so fearful of the impending revolution that their Ingenuity Is chiefly exercised In evad ing the point? The Evening Budget, organ of Swill town, and controlled body and soul by the gamblers and blacklegs of our city, attempted yesterday to make cap. Ital out of the fact that we had called twenty of the men Interviewed In its columns "criminals." We did more than that. We called them "self confessed criminals." And this is why we did it. There Is on the statute books of Or egon a law making gambling a crime. The following is the first section of this law: Each and every person who shall deal, play or carry on, open or cause to be opened, or who shall conduct, either as owner, proprietor, or employes, whether for hire or not, any game of faro, monte, roulette, rouge-et-noir, las- quenet, rondo, vlngt-un (or twenty-one) poker, draw poker, brag, thaw, or any banking or any other game played with cards, dice, or any other device, wheth er the same be played for money, checks, credits, or any other represen tative of value, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction there of shall be punched by a flna of not more than $500, and shall be Imprisoned in the county jail until such fine and costs are paid; provided that such per son so convicted shall be Imprisoned one day for every $2 of such fine and costs; and provided further, that such Imprisonment shall not exceed one year." Twenty of the men Interviewed by the Swilltown organ run or own gam bling tables, and every day of their lives, In this way, are guilty of open crime. They are therefore criminals. Whoever and whatever they are, they are criminals in the eyes of the law and nothing lees. One "cigar" man naively declares that the ordinance would Injure his business, though how a gambling af fair could have anything to do with the "cigar" business he foils to explain. Four others gravely protest that it would close up a number of saloons, and these gentry 'also forget to demon strate to an Inquisitive public how a legitimate saloon can be injured by an ordinance to restrict gambling. In short, without any beating about the bush, these disreputable operators are criminals. They derive three fourths of their revenue, under the guise of honest merchants, from their schools of corruption and from the worse than robbery of our young men that goes on In the back rooms of their establishments. , Th gambling evil it a iegradlnj eurse, but one which has wllhttoed all efforts to uproot tt. let It, therefore, bo eontrolled and eon fined within the narrowest possible limits.
