The schooner Fisher Maid cleared at the custom house yesterday for Port Townsend, in ballast. The schooner John O. North arrived in San Francisco Monday evening 1 days from Mahukonl, Hawaii, with thrilling report of an encounter with last week's northwester. Captain Carl Hon says it was blowing fully eighty miles an hour on the 24th, when the North was In latitude 36:27 north, long itude 132 west, and that the seas which broke on deck were the worst he ever experienced. All the sail set was blown away, and the weight of water was such that fifty-five barrels of a deck load of molasses were stove and lost, together with the water casks. Nearly all the provisions were spoiled and the cabin and forecastle were so full of water that dry clothes were unknown for the rest of the voyage. The mate -had his shoulder dislocated In the storm. The Oregon goes out today. She takes on several tons of general mer chandise at this port. A dispatch from Port Townsend an nounces that the tug Sea Lion, draw Ing twelve feet of water, struck on an uncharted rock yesterday. She was not seriously damaged, but her captain thinks tht 'vessels drawing more water would suffer wreck in the event of contact. The bearings of the h'.d den danger, which is off the entrance to Port Townsend, are as follows: Plont Wilson, east by north a hilf nort; Violet Point, Protection Inland southwest a quarter west; buoy south east a quarter east and distant about one-half a mile. The Stockton steamer, Captain Web er, while docking at the foot of Clay street Son Francisco, yesterday, fouled the steamer Humboldt, lying at the end of Washington street pier, and carried awfiy a piece of the Humboldt's guard rail. The Columbia come in from San Francisco yesterday, and after dis charging Astoria freight went up to Portland. The Haytlan Republic finished dis charging yesterday at the coal bunk ers. She discharged 2480 packages of Chinese merchandise, 375 tons of coal, and 4 passengers. She has been here since Wednesday and left up for Port land about noon. The t'two wrecked schooners Courser and Volant are lying at Howard pier, San Francisco. The latter vessel Is to be repaired and refitted. Captain John F. Ryan, the deepect diver in the world, says he is going to iwreck the old ship Belvldere, which went down in Puget Sound, about five years ago loaded with pig Iron and lead. The stem of the old wreck is now called "Pysht lighthouse," us a lantern Is hung on it to guide the steamer Garland which carries the mail to that point. The Celtic Race is still lying over at Brookfleld, waiting for a towboat to bring her over The Holyrood went up the river yes terday. The British ship Eskiaonl, Captian Townsend, and the British ship Blair gowrie, Captain Dark, which has been lying idle In San Francisco harbor for many month awaiting a charter foi lumber, have both been chartered from Puget Sound for the west coast of South America. The former Balled February 26th, and the latter February 27th, to load at Port Blukcley. Chief Engineer Kent of the firo boat Snoqualmie, lost a 9150 gold watch overboard Tuesday. Diver Benjamin, of Seattle, went down and in a few minutes brought It up. The water Is 28 feet deep at the place where it fell. The American ship T. F. Oaks ar rived at San Francisco after a long and tempestuous voyage from New York. On October 18th Charles Cook, an ordi nary seaman, fell from the main royal to the deck and was killed ,lnstantly. He was buried that night at 5 o'clock. Cook was 23 years of age, a native of Illinois, and lived formerly with his family In New York. On January 13th, John McKay, the first officer was or dered to his room by Captain Reed for abusing and then assaulting the cook, and refusing to obey orders. ' Greatly to the Joy of the crew, he was kept off duty from that time until the vessel reached port. An exchange reports "the efforts of . the Tennessee and Georgia Tobacco- Growing Association at Chattanooga, Tenn., have been so far successful that In the suroundtng country some fifteen associations have been formed, embracing ten counties. The Interest among farmers Is general, and it is setlmuted the plantings will yield a crop of at least 1,000,000 pounds of bright leaf, as It is thoug htthat this will give the best results. By the com ing fall preparations will have been completed for handling the crop In Chattanooga, and unlesa something Interferes there in A prospect for an other tobacco market." Besides the Belra Railway into Mush onaland, of which twelve miles have been laid, and the first section of which will probably be ready for traffic by the end of February rolling stock hav Ing already been dispatched curve)' are being made for three new railway into the transvaal. These are the lines from the Koomalla Poort to the Mur chlson goldflelds, from Johanneseburg to the De Kaap goldflelds, and from Pretora to the Natal railway system at Charleston. A projected line In from Walflsch Bay, ' on the west coast, through Bechunaland to the Trans- vaal, which, if carried out, "would completely rearrange the centers of trade activity in, South Africa. It would displace Cape Town as the first port of call for European steamers. A new line Is about to be built to connect the agricultural districts in the southwest province of Capo Colony with Cape Town, And several light railways are proposed to be constructed In Kaffrarla and elsewhere." The Baltimore Manufacturers' Re cord says: "The efforts of Arkansas people to improve the country roads of theli; state have culminated in a bill now before the legislature which provides for the Issuance of $100,000 of 5 per cent. 20-year bonds, the proceeds of which shall be distributed pro rata among the several countlse in propor tion to their taxable values, to be used as a primary road fund under the direction of the county court. If is to be hoped that this bill may pass and become a law, as there are few things which would confer a greater generul benefit among the people than good roads." Shipbuilding and commerce in New England were begun at Salem about 1640, when Hugh Peters was active In getting up a company to engage in the fisheries on the EaBtern coasts, which had been hitherto carried on exten sively by the people of Old England. The General Court mude an ordr that all property engaged In that business should be free from taxation for seven years. Peters was active In promoting the building of vessels, and In the course of two years bIx large vessels were built In which voyages were un taken to Madeira, the Canaries, and won afterwards to Spain, with cargoes of staves and fish, which found a ready market.
