Chamber of Commerce.
The regulur mating of the Chamber of
Commerce waa held laBt evening.
, A xpeclul committee, appointed by re
quest of Mr. M. Jensen, manager of the
Jensen Can Filling: machine Co., to ex
amine his latest Improved machines,
made report a follows:
Astoria, Jan. 26 1893.
To the Honorable the president and Mem
bers of the Astoria Chamber of Com
merce: Gentlemen: Regarding the communica
tion of Mr, M. Jensen, we, the committee
appointed by you on the same, beg to
report that we have examined some mod
els of Mr. Jensen's can-body making ma
chines, also models of other can-body
muklnir machines. In our opinion Mr.
Jciwiu machine Is a very valuable one
and very different to the other machines.
They require seven movements to accom
pllah what Mr. Jenneti's does with three.
We think that his invention la of great
lvalue to this community, and that it Is
of great Importance that his cane In lit
igation with Messrs. Norton Bros. & Co.
be brought to trial as soon as possible.

The chamber having been requested to
name to Governor a lit person to be ap
, pointed as one of the commissioners -to
the World' Columbian Exposition to be
held in Chicago to represent "Fish and
Planing apparatus," In accordance with
Senate Bill No. 21, referred the matter to
the Columbia. Klver Packers' Association
which convenes, irv this city today.
The following memorial to congress fa
voring the annexation of the Hawaiian
Islands wa presented and the secretary
was Instructed to forward the same with
out delay: ' . ',

To the Honorable, the Senate and House
of Representations, Washington, I. C:
Whereas, The Chamber of Commerce of
Astoria, Or., has been reliably Informed
of a, revolution and the establishment of
a provisional government at the Hawaiian
Islands, said "de facto" government now
seeKing annexation to Uie united milieu,
and
Whereas, The commercial relations now
existing between the two countries are
close and Important. Hawaii having be
come one of the most valuable commer
cial centers on the Pacific ocean, with
the promise of greatly increased value to
American interests when the Nicaragua
canal shull be completed, and
Whereas, The political interests of the
uiiutu mates anu its racmc ocean com
merce demand that no Kuropean power
shall Obtain control of the Hawaiian Is
lands to our detriment, and '
Whereas, The present conditions there
Involve the probability of disaster to the
lives and property of . American citizens,
therefore be it
Resolved, That this Chamber of Com
merce hnlls with satisfaction the friendly
offer to lie made by the Hawaiian gov
ernment to cede the Islunds tu the United
Htates; urging upon the United Htuttn
government the prompt acceptance of
the proposed cession, tnus at once obtain
ing peaceable and honorable possession;
insuring stable government; the protec
tion to lite and property . and the prc-
fionderatlng Intluence of the United Slates
n the growing commerce of the lJaclllc
ocean.
Resolved, That our government la ur
gently requested to promptly augment
the naival forces of the United Stales at
the Hawaiian Islands,-pending the dis
turbed political conditions there existing.
Resolved, That attested copies of these
resolutions bo forwarded to the Oregon
delegation lit congress, requesting tnetr
Iniluence in favor or tne prompt annexa
tion of the Hawaiian Islands, and that
these resolutions may be promptly pre.

' The steamer Harvest Moon came down
the river yesterday . bringing a bargi
which will be used to take up the remain
tier of the ship Solitaire's cargo now lying
on Hustler's wharf.
The J. M. Weatherwax, which arrived
at Port Townsend yeBtcrday, reports los
ing a seaman named Louis Olsen while
off Port Wilson In. a heavy blow. ,
The outfitting sealers have a fresh cause
for hurry. A second herd of young bull
seals, whose skins are the most desirable,
Is passing Point Reyes. Coasting captains
report them to be working northward in
countless thousands ten or fifteen miles
oft shore, and the belated fur hunters are
anxious to get out and lower their boats.
4 Tug Tyee, which went In search of the
ship reported capsized off Cape Flattery
last week, returned to the Sound Sunday
morning with a lumber vessel In tow. As
no report wo made of the result of her
search it Is presumed that the tugs were
unsuccessful. 1
The China sailed on time from San
Francisco yesterday, loaded to the full
extent of her capacity by reason of hav
ing the City of Peking's freight In add!
tlog to her own. The cabin was njso full,
nearly a many passengers booking for
Honolulu as - for Yokohama and Hong
Kong. '
Thelty of Topeka took 2 tons of
coal at the Oregon Improvement Com.
pany'a bunkers at Seattle Sunday, and
will sail for Alaska at I o'clock this
morning. Sho will carry about sixty tons
of freight. '
The tug Colby, sunk two weeks ago at
AIiib worth & Dunn's wharf, Seattle, has
been raised so that her upper works are
cut of water at high tide. 8he waa made
fnirt lu this position and will be bailed out
tft the first opportunity.
The first steam whaler ever built on
the Pacific roast waa launched from
Matthew Turner' ship yard at BetilcK
at 3 o'clock last Saturday afternoon. Quite
a large party went up from San Francisco
to wltnoas the launch, and the new blubber
was almost smothered with bunting as
she slid into the water. The customary
bottle of wine wo smashed against the
bow, and she was christened Jeanette,
The new steamer was built to the order
of Roth, Blum A Co., and will be ready
for sea, about the last of March. Like all
vessel built- by Captain Turner, the
Jeanette hua a fine model, and Is ex
ptctrd to prove the fastest whaler afloat,
both under steam and sail. She will mea
sure almut ::50 tons and will be com

The circuit court convened yesterday
morning at ten o'clock. - There is an ex
ceptionally long docket this term,' 141 civil
coses being on tho list. The criminal
docket Is very short and there are only
two of these cases to be tried. , The morn
