Aud yet Dave is accused ot lacKiug tho one essential clement ot successful pugilism sand. Campbell is twenty-fonr years of age, and in fightinfr trim weighs 1G5 pounds. His first fight was with Pete Lawler, a man much larger than himself, whom ho defeated iu one round and a half, in the Mechanics' Pavilion at Portland, in tho snmmer of 18S5. During the same sunnner he defeated Jim Itilcy in thirteen rounds, London prize ring rules. Tlie light look place ou an island down the river, and was fought with bare knucklci. In Ins next match Campbell mot n "Waterloo. It was his famous fight Avith Jack Denipsey, the Nonpareil, in October of the same year. About 3,000 sports went down the river to a small island about twenty miles from Portland. A ring was pitched and several huge bonfires tempered the chilly night air. Nearly all the money (some 813,000) was upon Campbell, and as tho men stripped for battle everyone said, "poor Jack, poor Jack.' Denip sey looked like n mere pigmy beside his formidable adversary. Before the end of the third round, however, it was "poor Dave." Campbell lay in the ring with a broken nose, unable to come to tho scratch, and Little Jack was declared the victor. Camp bell had come in oontacfc with one of the "Nonpareil's" unexpected left handers. Campbell next went East, and on his return from Philadelphia, where he met all corners for a week, he defeated John P. Clough, who was recently shot and killed in Denver, in six rounds. Ho trained Dempsey for the middle-weight championship fight with the "jVTarine." and in December, '89, fought an eight-round draw (?) with Jim Corbett, in tho Mechanics Pavilion in Portland. "When the Dempsey combination went East last summer, he starred as tho heavy weight, and defeated thirty or forty raorif'nnKmgbelflrefesM ueorge Jiessier, auu iraauy xrennan. At present he is training for a fight with Larry Sullivan, of Astoria. Larry bnllivan is Astoria's pet. He is about 25 years of age, and when in condition weighs from 1G9 to 1G3 pounds. Ho suffered defeat at the hands ot Tom. "Ward, on tho Demy- scy-Campbell battle field in 18S5, tlie faght. lasting eignty-seven rounds. Ho was defeated by Ward, in Astoria, tho second lime two years later, and hen defeatcdJiilly bcott, in Astoria, in twenty-five rounds. He is looked up to as a coming pugilist in his class. liilly bcott, or Astoria, is a man or about the same age, build and weight as Sullivan, but he lacks tho latter s science and endncance. no Has de feated a number of local fighters, but got bested by Sullivan in twenty-fiva rounds last August, and by Tom Cleary in four rounds in 1SSS. Tom Ward, oE Portland, had his first fight in East Portland eight years ago, when he defeated John Ditch burn, now a practicing attorney iu Portland, iu forty-nine rounds. One other man who suucrcu defeat at the hands of Ward is Albert Johnson, who gave up the contest at the cud of fourteen rounds. Larry Sullivan was defeated by him twice. Ward has left the prize ring, and is now in business m Portland. Billy L3'nn, who at one time was a fighter of considerable note in tho Northwest, is at present serving a seven years' scnteuco in tho Walla Walla penitentiary for fatally shoot ing Jack Mulligan in the Spokesman oD'e at Spokauo Palls last winter. Lynn is what is known as a "rough and tumble fighter,' for, when hard pressed, he has been known to iick, bito and claw. Lynn was defeated by Jack Callahan, when he made his debnte in the prize ring in Montana about nino years ago. He defeated Jack Waile in a three-hour fight in Montana seven years ago, and in 188G defeated Prof. Young Duchy, then tho "noted Australian champion," in three rounds, at the City Yiow Park. Portland. His last figlit in Portland wa3 in the winter of 18S9-90, when Paddy Gorman put him to sleep iq three rounds. Billy Morgan, now city marshal of Bast Portland, was somewhat of a prizering celebrity seven or eight years ago. It took Tom Manning seventy rounds to defeat him, but he got the best of George Edwards on a bargo down tho river from Portland, in four rounds. Onco he undertook to knock out Tommy Warren in. four rounds, but did not succeed Duncan McDonall, who achieved considerable reputation through his fight with Pete McCoy at But to City, Montana, in 1881, is now running a hotel in Helena, Montana. Tho mill with McCoy was fought with hard. . jjoves and lasted thirty-two rounds. JifcCoy was awarded the fight through a f ouL Jack White, tho well-known heavy weight of Butte City, i3 now a deputy sheriff at Wardner, Idaho. George Kessler, the Montana xy, has added a new feather to his cap through a recent fight with iJa Blanche, which was declared a draw. There is no question but that Keller had tho best of the contest. Kessler defeated Mike Brennan in Butte City and was defeated by Brennan in Tacoma. Hh match -with Billy Woods in Denver, a year ago. ended in a row and was stonned. Kessier has aTso suffered defeat at the hands of Campbell. Like Lynn, Kessier ha3 a weakness for rough-and-tumble tactics when facing a formidable adversary. He has had many good fights with local men and is improving .wonderfully.
