The Salem Statesman calls those
who are urging the removal o the
Willamette university from that city,
wreckers," and says: "The feeling
against the absolute dishonesty of the
attempted removal of the Willamette
university is almost universal in Sa
lem. There is no spark of honesty in
the proposition. This phase of the
question does not seem to have en
tered the calculations of the wreckers."
The Mc Minnville Reporter says "Sa
lem is in a slato of agony over the
prospect of the university going to
Portland. Salem is the better loca
tion for an institution of learning, but
it is one of the vicious tendences of
the times that everything is drifting
toward tho great commercial centers."
It is not at all likely that Salem will
allow tho college to be wrested from
her. Salem has as much energy and
enterprise as other towns in Oregon
and will probably spend as much to
keep what she has already, as others
will to get it away. And, by the way
the agitation in Astoria to get the
college does not seem to bo violent
