(2) A&A-.. . . She gattg gaWtau ASTORIA. OREGON: MONDAY .DECEMBER 22, 1880 The English engineer Las arrived at Portland, and iriil at onco co over both the completed and surveyed portions o the Astoria & South Coast railroad. It is scarcely possible that after a careful investigation of the proposed line, he can fail to be con--rwced of the favorable prospects of the road, and ho will probably see its advantages so plainly that he ivill recommend his employers to take the bonds. Wiusixoro winds Saturday night p?w; a rather mournful refrain, causing oao to feel as if better contented on shore than if tossing over the waves in a heavily laden craft Tet onshore it ras not very disagreeable, only a little too windy, but it is in pleasing con trol to the deep snow which prevails in many portions of tliig country, as well as in England at this time. Truly a home in Oregon is a good thing to have, cither summer or winter, where xro have no extremes of heat or cold, bnt generally a happy medium. Pkomtxext in the history of our country no day stands forward in grander significance, nest to our na tion s natal day than does the twenty second day of December, the anniver sary of the landing of tho Pilgrims, which occurred just 270 years ago. Interwoven into tho fundamental structure of our glorious government ar tho noble principles of those old pioneers, whose devotion to liberty aad consciencious adherence to right htve permeated our entire national sjsloin, and through all these long years embracing nearlv three cen turies, the light of their brilliant ex ampb shines brightly to-day, with a lustre undiminished and a purity un stained. The importance of the day accounts for the space given to tho subject in these columns, and it is so beautifully given in verso by Mrs. Hemans, that her grand poem is also inserted. Contcdexce among business men and in financial circles is steadily im proving, and there is every reason to believe that throughout the whole country business prospects will im prove with the coming year. "Wall street financiers feel encouraged, and they are sure guides in money mat ters. As this feeling of confidence and security increases, the beneficial effects will be felt all over the land. Many cities have bonds on the market and as soon as they can be sold, im provements will be commenced, and the money thus distributed to mechanics and laborers will be a bene fit to all classes of business. Railroad building at present is almost sus pended in various parts of the country in consequence of the tightness of the money market, and the difficulty of placing bonds, all of which will be re sumed by tho increase of confidence and consequent ease of finances.
