Denver, Dec. 19. A News special
received early this morning from Camp
Cheyenne river, by Conner to Eapid
City says:
From twenty to thirty ranchers
rode into camp to-day. All agree that
the Indians aro augmenting their
forces and aro growing bolder hourly.
It was ascertained early this morning
that the deserted ranch and out
buildings of a man named Wilson
were burned to the ground last night,
having first been looted.
M. H. Day, aide to Governor
Mellette, reports that beside sevontv
Tepees between Battle and Spring
creek, ho saw another large band of
Indians further down tho Cheyenne
river. He thinks they number at
least 300 and estimates that they had
1,000 head of ponies and a large num
ber of cattle with them, most of which
bad been stolen.
Early this morning General Carr
sent Captain Stanton, of tho 6th
Cavalry, with his troop, numbering
about sixty men, to scout and look
around for Indians in the Bad Lands.
Three heliograph stations have been
established, one in Camp 1, ono up on
top of the high bluffs and ono which
had followed, up as nearly as practic
able, Captain Stanton's command.
A soldier from tho Heliograph sta
tion reported to General Carr that
Captain Stanton was in engagement
with the Indians. General Carr gave
orders for Lieutenant Scott and troop
"D" to go to his assistance.
Later Captain Stanton and other
troops returned. It was learned he
had a skirmish with a largo party of
Indians headed for the Bad Lands.
Shots were exchanged in quite a lively
manner for sometime, when the Indi
ans escaped to the Bad Lands. Cap
tain Stanton followed them for some
time, but fearing an ambush, ho
withdrew his troop3 and returned to
camp.
