MSIETBESTAURAKT-JEFF'S SAFE BOBBERS STILL AT LARGE. Ho Cine to the Mgd Wlo "Blew" Parte & Hausotf s Safe. 11 1G MOXIZY OVJJI2LOOKED. Hundreds of persons visited tho store of Parker & Hanson jestenlaj and viewed the wrecked safe, which was blown open by burglars shortly after 2 o'clock yesterdaj' morning as was detailed in The Astobiax. The iron chest is a complete wreck. Tho contents were at first thought to be intact, but investigation after day light came disclosed that the burglars had boldly remained after the doors of the safe had been blown off and secured 7 in coin and commenced gouging out the steel money box in the safe when they thought it best to fly without securing it Prior to blowing the safe the thieves robbed tho money drawer in tho counter of S25. Chief Barry and his officers with 1 outside assistance went to work on 1 the case immediately. It was found that the door of the safe had not been touched by a drill and for a time it wa3 a mystery how tho theives got powder enough in behind both doors of the safe, to blow them off. A care ful examination showed that a hole had been drilled through the left hand side of the safe back of the in side door. Tho robbers then loaded thesafe with powder and blew both inside and outside doors off. It was a job similar to one done in Portland last week and while tho offi cers refuse to state whom they sus pect, it is pretty certain that the men mat operaieu in x'oruanu last wcck were the same that did tho work in Parker & Hanson's store. There is also suspicion that the safe crackers are Chinese, Footprints in a yard in tho rear of the plundered store show that whoever the robbers were they wore American boots, but as Chinese sometimes do this it does not relieve that nationality from tho suspicion. However, the officers have strong sus picions and the next forty-eight hours will doubtless see one or more persons behind tho bars. In investigating the case yesterday the officers found that the burglars had paid their respects to Liddicoat & Cribb's carpenter shop first There they opened and ransacked the safe but did not find it necessary to do any "blowing." Some $300 in money was overlooked. The thieves obtained ad mission by forcing a back door. They satisfied themselves with taking the few tools which were found in tho store of Parker & Hanson. These they used principally in cutting through the floor. The New Charter Completed. Senator Fulton and City Attorney Curtis of the new city charter com mittee, held a meeting and completed the work. The other members of the committee were conspicuous only by their absence. The new charter as prepared, has been outlined in Tiie Astokiax here tofore. It will, if adopted prove bene ficial to the city. It increases the powers of the city council; makes it ipossiuie to uona tne city ror naif a t million; provides for the improvement -. . . -.-., .. i .t of streets by taxation; extends the city limits so as to include what is now termed Alderbrook andTJnion- 2L for other needed reforms. A Practical Common-Sene Plan. , Editor Astoriax- I A have heard to day a great many Astorians discussing Granger's plan for a half million subscription bonus for a trans-continental road. The string to it, and wholly m the interest of Astoria. H even body would now get in and work up the bonus as pro posed, it looks like a pretty sure thing for a railroad. 1 would freely give my ten per cent, of the assessed values to get a railroad here, and thanky, too. Merchant. Echoes from the People. Editor Asteriax: I read with in terest the "subscription paper" plan submitted by "Granger" in this morn ing's Astoriax. Keep the ball rolhng. If the people get fully aroused on this plan for united action a railroad will run into Astoria in a 3 ear. All we have to do is to get a reliable bonus into the hands of one man as trustee and he can talk business with tho people who build railroads, one of whom is J. H. Smith. Cuarrux. A man pursued by bullets fled up Fifth street alxrat.7 o'clock last even ing, and caused considerable excite ment, and a big sensation. The man's name is Andrew Schuring, and the man that sent the bullets after him is a Mr. Greer, who resides with his young wife on Olney street near Fifth. It appears from Greer's statement that Mrs. Greer, whose Christian name is Eliza, has been tho object of his suspicion, and last evening he set out to watch his better half. She has been emplojed in a down town hotel for some time past, and as Greer claims, was in the habit of meeting Schuring on the street Be this as it may, Schuring and Mrs. Greer met last evening in front of Bain's mills on Fifth and Genevivo streets. The salulion of "good evening" was punctuated by a pistol shot which was followed by twa others, and Schuring left hastily as stated. Tho shots attracted Deputy Sheriff Kenney, but as no one seemed to want to make a complaint, and as Schuring was over the hills, no arrests were made. II. II. Bancroft. It is a source of pleasure and pride to Pacific Coast people to know that our own historian, Hubert Howe Ban croft, stands in the very front rank of America's distinguished literary men. That wonderful historical series, which it has taken so many ears to complete, has made him famous tho world over. A brilliant array of emi nent scholars of Europe and America, including Herbert Spencer, Huxley, Dr. John TV. Draper, Emereou, Brl ant, Holmes, Howells, Wendell Phil lips, Whittier, Longfellow, Sir Arthur Helps and scores of othera whose names are familiar to book loving peo ple, have come forward and testified to their appreciation of his genius. Di plomas and complimentary certificates from scientific and literary institu tions have been showered upon him. Yale college has conferred the honorary degreo of Master of Arts. That powerful and inde pendent journal, the famous London Times, The Thunderer, devoted two wholo columns to a review of Ban crofts works, and England's most dignified journals discussed at length each separate volume as it appeared. Now comes tho news that Hubert Howe Bancroft has received a num ber of votes for a place among the "Immortals." an honor that those who know what tho "Immortals" are, will appreciate. A new work which the author has been engaged on for years has just appeared from Mr. Bancroft's pen. It is called "Literary Industries." and is tho graphic story of a great achieve ment told by a master hand. The nature of tho work is such that it will have a remarkable sale, especially on this coast, where many of the people mentioned are well known. The work is to be sold by subscription, and the publishers want responsible agents to receive orders. We call attention to their advertisement under Help Wanted. Burglars Foiled Again. Three burglars broke into Herman ! Wise s big clothing store in the Occi dent hotel building and leisurely pro ceeded to pack off a lot of the finest cloths, when our ever vigilant police force swooped down upon them, they didn't attempt to escape at all, for having noticed how low these fine goods were marked down, they con cluded that it was cheaper to buy than steal them, and get a chance in the drawing for those elegant Xmas pres ents besides. It is a mistake to try to cure catairli by using local anulications. Catarrh being a constitutional disease, requires a constitutional remedy like Hood's Sarsaparilla, which, acting through the uiooa, reacnes ceryj)artot the sj stem. The County Conrt.
