SATCRDAY.
..DEOEMBER 13, 1600
CoxsroPUKivr. favorable comment;
Las been beard amonff bnsinees men
on the plan proposed by "Granger" to
raise a subsidy for the first railroad
which shall give to this city a trans
continental connection. The plan
seems to be one "which is calculated
to guarantee the necessary funds trith
the least hardship to the subscribers.
TTith a proper limitation as to time
there -will be absolutely no risk on the
part of the subscribers, as a railroad
trould create the value from which its
small percentage would be drawn, and
the obligation would be distributed
equitably among those to be benefited
bv it.
Vermont legislators evidently have
notions of their own in regard to their
duties to their constituents, as an act
has been passed in that state lately
which it is thought will receive the ap
proval of the governor. It prohibits
the manufacture of "any article in im
itation or semblance of natural butter
or cheese' unless colored pink, and
theuscofoleo atpy public eating
house is also prohibited, unless it is
colored pink. Heavy penalties are im
posed for violating the law. Butter is
defined as "the product usually known
by that name, and which is manufact
ured exclusively from milk or cream
or both, and with or without salt or
coloring matter." It looks as if this
new law would probably be held un
constitutional and void. It is a pre
scription as to the manner of prepar
ing an article of food, by which it is
adulterated and contaminated. As
well might our Oregon legislature
enact that Columbia river sturgeon
shall not be put on the tables of rest
aurants in this state unless the afore
said sturgeon be dyed green, so that
it may not be mistaken for sea bass.

The London Times says: "The
whole monetary S3stem o tho United
States is in a muddle. The condition
is due to the piecemeal legislation by
unpriucipled legislators. Unfortun
ately, instead ot thero being signs of
amendment, it looks likely that farther
attomps will be made to legislate in
favor of particular classes. Tho most
omiuious ot these attempsisthe de
mand of the fanners' alliance for more
currency, and that national banks be
compelled to lend money on security
otreal estate. If the latter demand
is ever granted America "will be
launched on the dangerous path
which the Argentine Bepublic trod.
The present crisis is of an ordinary
character, but was made worse by
foolish monetary arrangements. The
only safe cure for it is liquidation."
The Times is fond of predicting dis
aster to American institutions but so
far its foiecasts have not been remark
able for their correctness.

Oxe of the last acts of the recent
convention of the national fanners1
alliance, ras the adoption of a resolu
tion that the policy of alliance "will bo
to -withhold all support from news
papers which do not conduct alliance
departments, or at least publish alli
ance news regularly. This arrange
ment does not compel the support of
alliance measures or the advocacy of
alliance demands on the part ot these
newspapers in their editorial columns,
but does compel a certain degree of
frendlinoa6 on their part, and amounts
to an absolute boycott of all news
papers -which do not come up to the
terms of the resolution. The farmers
-will have to be careful or they will
commit their organization to a policy
that will prove a destructive boomer
ang to their continued success. The
farmers of the country above all others
should represent a safe conservatism
free from the arbitrary and bulldosing
methods that have proved a disin
tegrating weakness to other organiza
tions that seemed possessed of over
whelming strength at tho outset of
their political career.
