OREGON: WHOLESAIiE AND RETAIL DEALER IN lay SI n y o I l it w FiUDAY. ..-DECEMBER 12, lfi)D Politics in South Carolina appears io be nndorgoing a cliango, judging by the report o tho election of a new senator to succeed "Wade Hampton, where a young reformer has been chosen. Strangest of all the strange tales of shipwreck aud suffering at sea, is the telegraphic report published this morning, of the trials and sufferings of a crew on board a ship on tho Black sea. Some of tho statements are scarcely possible. GovrnxiiENT vessels built on the Atlantic do uot seem to bo as success ful as those constructed on this coast A case in point is tho cruiser JVetoarJc which has just made a second and mi successful trial trip. As soon as she is repaired a third attempt to achieve success will be made. AsroniA will not bo very likely to have a railroad unless her citizens pay for it themselves, or give nearly enough iu land or property, to reim burse some other parties for tho cost of its construction. Even then it would be a good investment for the citizens, as a railroad is cheap at any price. lirsrnDiATEiiT upon the completion of a railroad from here to the Willam ette valley and a connection with the throe main lines in Oregon, tho value of real estate here would bo increased from two to three times its present valuation, aud such an impetus would be jnven as would soon make this ono of the most prominent and rapidly growing cities on the Pacific coast Tho donation of one-quarter, or one third of the property of the entire city, it it wonld secure a railroad, would prove to be a highly profitable investment It therefore follows that if unity of action could be had tho ciUnous of Astoria alone could build a railroad. "Whatevku tho future of Astoria bhall be during the coming year which is so quickly to dawniiponus depends more upon the action of our citizens than upon any or all outsido influences. Tboreisuo excellence without great labor, and the man or city who de sires success, must expect to work for it Fortunes are not thrown to idle waiters, who sit down quietly and an ticipate the favors of tho fickle god dess to be poured into their upturned baskets. Millionaires are not hunt ing for hives of drones where they may unsolicited give away fortunes. Wo must work to win, and when we show a desire to help ourselves, wo may then reasonably anticipate assist ance. Frcsli Eastern Chestnuts. Stain St bet. 1st, and 2d. 1, X. L. IJuildhitr. Fruits.
