ASTORIA, OREGON: THURSDAY- ..DECEMBER 11,1890 PoKTiiAXD favors a consolidation, so that East Portland and Albina snail be added to tho former and all consid ered as one city. Quite in contrast to the delightful climate of Astoria is the report of a man being frozen to death in Wayne county," Pennsylvania last Monday evening, as he was driving home from Honesdale to Aldenville, his dead body being found frozen stiff in the wagon the next morning. CosDiEEOATi bodies, such as boards of trade and chambers of commerce, have been increasing in numbers quite rapidly of late, all over the country, until now it is reported at the session of the national board of trade at ew Orleans that the number of them i3 1,171, with a total member ship of 231,000. Their influence in their respective localities is great, and m every instance they have proved highly beneficial. Even in this city, every resident will admit that the chamber of commerce has been of great benefit of Astoria. Gkematiox is steadily growing in popularity, and at the present rate, there will ere long be a crematory es tablished in every large city. The idea ot having a corpse cremated is at first thought repugnant to many, but a little reflection will convince any person that it is preferable to having the remains of a friend consumed by worms, especially when it is consid ered that after incineration, tho ashes of the deceased can be kept in an urn or glass case, and thus bo ever pres ent, and this certainly is far preferable to the horrid thought that a dear one is mouldering away in the putrid grave. Asa sanitary precaution for the living, it is far better than having our buried friends poison the water we drink and pollute the air we breathe. If cremation prevailed, many sources of disease would be re moved, and thus many deaths averted. iloNDAT next is tho time for the meeting of the stockholders of the As toria & South Coast railroad, and the day for the election of directors of the company for the oomiug year. "Wednesday next is the day for the sale of the securities of the road to pay the claim of about $50,000, owing to J". H. Smith, the contractor, for "work done on the Seaside division. Some prominent gentlemen of; this city are considering the question of the purchase of those securities and settling the claim of Smith. If they do that they certainly should have the naming of the directory next Mon day, and to this it would seem as if the stockholders should offer no objec tion. "Whoever cancels that debt the company owes Smith, will do it with the intention of completing the con struction of the road and they should therefore receive the cordial assistance of every stockholder, for the comple tion of a road means the salvation and prosperity of Astoria. iilllLOIl'S CURE will immediately relieve Croup, Whooping Cough and Bronchitis.
