. r 0-) Sk gailjj grttai. ASTORIA. OREGON: TUESDAY. L DEOEMBEE 9, 1890 Indications are remarkably favor able for railroal news of importance to be made public in a very few days. "TmaiEis no great loss without some small gain,'C"is an old saying, and it may prove true here, for, if Uncle Sam will not improve the chan nel in Young's bay, he surely cannot object to having it bridged that the railroad may cross. Any railroad from Astoria to Portland or the Will amette valley should start from some other part of Clatsop county. RemabkabiiY sudden was the sum mons which came to a minister in New Jersey on Sunday, for he almost died at his post, having been stricken with death while preaching in the pulpit, after stating how easy it was for a man to falL It was a strange coincidence, but if any man is ready for death without any warning, a minister surely should be, and it is hoped he has gone to his reward. Axotheb long drawn legal fight is soon to dawn upon San Francisco, for the famous Blythe case which was supposed to have been definitely set tled a short time ago, after dragging for a long time through the courts is to bo reopened, and now when it will ever be ended, would be more than even a Philadelphia lawyer could presume to affirm. There is too much money in the plum for the lawyers to drop it as long as they can possibly keep it up. livrnEK discouraging is the news flashed over the wires last nicht from "Washington, as it appears that the engineers who examined the locality reported as not worthy of improve ment, the channel in Young's bay from the ship channel of the Colum bia rivcr, and this report was sent by the secretary of war to the speaker of the houo and by that officer presented to the house yesterday. In regard to the obstructions in the way of snags in the lower Columbia between As toria and Wood's landing, the same report favors their removal by the government snag boat. Boston capitalists are of the opinion that tho Chicago, Burlington and Quiucy road is considering a proposi tion to extend the line through to tho Pacific coast, it having been submitted by a member of the board of directors. This goes to show tho desire of all the main lines to have an outlet on the Pacific so as to secure a share of the rapidly increasing business, while it is but a few years since none- of the trunk lines had any desire whatever in this direction, for they deemed us of no account in a commercial point of view. Meanwhile the population here has rapidly increased and with it tho volume of business until now they arc all anxious to have a share of it. C:iclilcn"s Arnica Salrc.
