cq I Mt gpftj &$Mm ASTORIA. OBEGOU: 210XDAr. DECEMBER S, 18WT North CABOiaof a appears to be a hard place for a man to live, "who tries to administer justice in an official capacity, as the telegraph brings tidings o how an ex-mayor and police judge was found bound to a tree, with half of his head shaved and other indignities perpetrated upon him, evi dently done by lawbreakers who had at some time come under his judicial control. Axotheb one of those accidents which are becoming so alarmingly fre quent, occurred yesterday across the river, and a man is here in the hos pital ith but little hope of recovery, and all because a companion mistook him for wild game and shot him. Generally tbe bungling, stupid hunter fires at a man, thinking it is a deer, but this time the blockhead thought he was shooting at a bear. These ac cidents occur every week, and it is high time that stringent laws were passed which shall put a stop to this ofttimes fatal stupidity. Another strange thing about these affairs is the fact that men who are so stupid as not to discern a man from a deer are al most certain to hit the fnn they fire at, while it is doubtful if the same hunter could hit the broadside of a barn at any other time. Evidekce is being manifested that the real object of King Kalakaua's vkit to the United States is to secure the annexation of the Hawaiian king dom to this country. That it would be an important acquisition to this nation no one will doubt who is at all familiar with the island kingdom. We would then be producers of not only our own sugar but would have some to export, for the present production of sugar in the islands is about a quar ter of a billion pounds annually. The McKinleybill provides the payment ottwo cents per pound for all sugar raised in the United States and if the islands were added to Uncle Sam's dominion, the planters there would receive annually about five million dollars bounty, and realizing this fact it is not strange that they favor an nexation, so that they will be citizens of the union. Very few, if any, strong reasons can be presented against the annexation of the island, and there fore it is altogether likely that the union may be effected. $1,000 ItEWAED, Wkat Would Astoria Bo Witk ont Jeff? $1,000 reward iu U.
