Special.to The Astouias.J Tacoma, Dec. 4 A large Eeizure of opium was made here last night by custom house officials on the steamer Olympian, some 220 pounds of the drug being captured. It is valued at S4.000. The smugglers were Jas. Mc Carthy, a fireman, and Jno. Stodder, an oiler, who now languish in jail. The men, who were in a small boat alongside the steamer to receivo the opium, escaped. The arrested men were held over to appear before the United States court Tlic UXIiicrs Strike. A few have returned to work and indications point to an early set tlement It is rumored here that the strike is the result of a conspiracy. Work will probably soon be resumed. The miners say they are out for an ad vance and that the report of a con spiracy is untrue. Some of the opera tors aro arranging to fill the mines with negroes. A Rumor Denied.
