L A clover capture of a mail robber was made hers at 3 o'clock yesterday morning by Henry' Ford, a mail transfer clerk. Ford was entering the post office to take out tbe early morning mails, when bo discovered a man at the mailing case opening letters. Ford withdrew without being seen and so cured assistance. All points of egress from tbe office were guarded aud an advance by Ford was made on the robber. The man showed light, but threw up his hands when a shot was fired, at him. Ho proved to bo D. Bagley alias Ben G. Line, of Denver. He had worked as a waiter, in the hotel adjoin ing the post office and had secured considerable boody when ho was inter rupted. Saturday even ing tho second mate on the steamship Costa Iiica, reached hero in one of the ship's boats and reported that the steamer was ashoro seven miles below Race Bocks. Tho Costa Rita was bound from San Francisco to Departure bay, where she was to have taken a return load of coal for Messrs. B. Dunsmuir &Sons. A dense fog was encoun tered in the Straits of Fuca, and tho ship was forging her way slowly and cautiously. At noon not a sight of land could be seen when the ship suddenly went crashing onto a shelv ing rock, smashing her forefoot. There she stuck and the second mate was immediately started for tho city to procure assistance. The tug Lome was got in readiness, but owing to tho thickness of the fog could not leave until Sunday morning, when she went expect ing to get the Costa Rica afloat. Nothing since has been heard from the scene of the wreck and up to 130 p. m. tho Lome had not returned. This morning tho weather was thick and blustering with the appearance of dirty weather. The customs officials say that tho s'muggling of whisky from tho United States into Canada, via the St Lawrence nnd St. Pierre missions, has been carried on to such an extent this year, as to make Tery serious inroads upon the revenue. Some 250,000 was derived, from this source from Jan. 30th up to this date last year, while for tho samepe iod this year, there has been a decreaso of S80.000. Officials say that according to their advices, some 10,000 barrels of liquor has been smuggled into the country this 3 car, of wheih 18,000 gallons came from Boston alone. Killed by a Runaway. Special to The Astokian.1 San Bernardino, Dec 1. To-day Peter Frasier, while driving a spirited team was passed by a man on horse back with a bnndlo under his arm. It is supposed that the horses became frightened at tho bundle, for both gave a jump at tho samo time, throw ing Frasier from his scat and under the wheels, which passed over his head killing him instantly.
