Several fishermen reside at St Helens. They make a good living be sides laying up considerable money. The broad bosom of the Columbia, rippled by a gentle breeee, reflects the diamond's flashes these moonlit nights. Letters of administration on the estate of Captain Isaac Thomas, de ceased, were filed with tho county clerk Tuesday. And still reports come in of new comers arriving in all parts of Colum bia county. This is only a beginning of what is to come. To ma'ke a city attractive, it should b3 kept clean and neat "Work on the streets and alleys of St Helens, would do much toward this end. Petitions for county roads in tho Carrico and Nehalem valleys have been posted, and will be presented at the January term of the county court. It is now an almost settled fact that the Great Northern railroad, reaching ont for the vast products of Oregon, will cross tho Columbia near Eanier. If preparations for improvement which are now on foot are consnmated, St Helens will prove no mean rival to tho leading cities of the Columbia in the near future. Considerable activity is noted in tho Scappoose iron district this week. Portland parties aro negotiating for the purchase of some of them and preparations arc being made to pnsh work on others. That board of trado has not been organized yet A meeting should be called at once, and steps for organiza tion taken. Tlio sooner this is done, the sooner will tho town attract at tention. Parties in St Helens will soon bo gin fishing for sturgeon by setting hooks where the fish will run into them. There are several very large hooks placed on a lino a short distance apart and so arranged that tho fish will strike them in passing. "When the' aro caught by ono hook, they Hop around and become enmeshed on the other hooks, making it impossible for them to escape. In the near future, St. Helens will refuse lo act as the tail lo tho Astoria or Portland kite, but will fly through the buoyant atmosphere of develop ment loher own high destiny. For somo time past these places have been prone iojlook upon Columb'a county as a tributary country merely, aud what ever they havo don 3 towatd tlevclop meat heie has beon in a half-hearted an! purely selfish way. Times aro changing, however, aud wo now find, that we aro abundantly able to fly qurownkito and push boldly lo the front as one of the leading cities of the lower Columbia.
