MORE RUMORS OF IHDIAH WiR
Hostile HeOmeu Sail to 1b Massing
For a Battle.
squa, mrnx vrnnn tiirratesed
Special by TheU.iitsd Pbess.1
Fort Sum, S. D., Nov. 25. It is
believed that the hostile Indians from
the Grand Eiver, Cheyenne, Rosebud
and Pine Ridge reservations are mass
ing at some point for a stand against
the troops under command of General
Brooke.
News comes that Indiana in war
paint well equipped have been passing
through the Zeibach country for sev
eral days. Their, destination is a
point on tho "White river, a day's hard
ride from the Pine Ridge and Rosebud
agencies. This in formation is brought
by squaw men, who had been threat
ened with death by tho hostile Sioux.
"Washtngtox, Nov. 2G. The war de
partment this morning received news
that tho Cheyenne Indians had aban
doned the war dance and come m for
rations. This is regarded as a most
hopeful sign of the abatement of the
excitement.
The 120 scouts enlisted will, it is"
hoped, exert a strong and peaceful in
fluence through family and tribal re
lations. Chicago, Nov. 2G. General Miles,
to-night, received tho following tele
gram from Governor Millette of South
Dakota. It is dated Pierre, S. D.:
"Scotty Phillips, a cattleman, living
at the month of Grandstono on Butte
creek brings me tho following intelli
gence: 'Phillips is a very cool,
courageous and reliable man and was
a government scout throughout the
Sioux and Cheyenno troubles. He
reports that eight days ago five lodges,
containing twelve bucks, armed with
Winchesters and laden with ammuni
tion camped at his house, going from
Rosebud agency to a largo camp,
which is formed on "White river at the
mouth of Pass creek. The Indians
were surly and defiant in manner.
One of them said ho had seen tho
time when they used to beat out the
brains of children and drink women's
blood, and that tho time was coming
when they would do it again.
In the last few days Phillips has
had twenty cattlo killed by Indians.
Three htdf-breeds from White river
flopped at Phillips' house on Monday
night and said they expected to una
the settlements destroyed when they
got home. Phillips says everybody
who has been among the Indians auy
length of lime, without exception,
say that there is goiutr to be an
uprising and that very quickly.
