The presi dent realizes that he would make "hioro enemies by removing General Denby than he would securo friends. Thcro is an undercurrent of con siderable strength among democratic leaders in favor of General Denby for the vice president's place on the ticket in 1892. Some thing of a sensation was created in political circles this morning by the publication of a letter from "William Fishback, of Fort Smith, addressed to United States Senator James K. Jones, in wliich the writer make3 a novel proposition. He says that as both desire to go to the United Stales senate, and as there is a growing sentiment all over the country that the people should have a voice in the election of their senators, he proposes that they agree to leave the choice between them to the people of the state, and they join in a request to the chairman of the state central committee to appoint a date upon which the democrats of the state shall hold primary elections, and indicate by their votes which one of them is their choice. Colonel John A. Baker, a well-known stock operator, -who lived at Devon, Pa., is missing. He is known to have been heavily interested in stock of the Lehigh Navigation Company, which within the past few weeks, has heavily depreciated in value. Thursday morning he left his home, ostensibly for Philadelphia, and has not since been seen or heard of. Colonel Baker i3 understood to have been the organizer and chief holder of a largo block of Lehigh Navigation stock. FLOODS IN EUROPE. Towns in Austria and Germany Suffer Damage. Special to Tue AsToniAx.l Tacoma, Nov. 21. Tommy Itwis, an Indian, living on tho reservation here, was cut in two by a Northern Pacific train Saturday night while walking on the track. He was intoxicated at the time. Business men are complaining of poor business and slow collections. Tho first through train from Tacoma to Anacortes will leave here to-morrow morning. About SoO.OOO of tho SIOO.OOO wanted for tho purchase of the Union Pacific railroad terminal grounds, ha3 already been subscribed and the com mittee says thoy will have easy sailing for the rest. The team of J. E. Alsop ran away to-day, throwing Mrs. Alsop out, she deceiving injuries from which she died this evening. SEVERAL DISASTERS AT SEA. Fierce Storm Raging Along the Britisii Coast. A A'UJTIiEIt OF VJESSELS X.OSI Special by The Ukitkd Pkess 1 London, Nov. 24. There is no abatement in tho fury of tho storm prevailing in tho English Channel and elsewhere along the British coast. Numerous wrecks and collisions are reported. At Hartland the British steamer UppingJiam, from Cordiff for Port Said, is ashore. Twenty-one persons have been taken off, bnt the first offi cer is drowned and a boat containing five of the crew is missing. The Danish schooner Hegina has been sunk in a collision with the steamer Primate. Five of the schoon er's crow were drowned. The steamer put into Copenhagen. The British steamship Calypso, from Mediterranean ports, foundered off Sandgate after being in a collision. The crew has arrived at Folkstone. The collision occurred last night with another vessel, a Spanish steamer. It is supposed that the Spaniard also foundered. HatiTfax, Nov. 24. Special b7Tho Usited Pbkss. FaiiKTttiTit:, Ala., Nov. 24. Dr. A. M. Turner, an ex-member of the legis lature, last night, choked his wife and little daughter to death. The doctor has twice been a patient in an insane asylum. The child raised an alarm before being killed and when the citizens rushed in they found the doctor in a wild frenzy. He declared that his wife had tried to kill him and that he acted in self -defense throughout. A RECEIVER WANTED. Tlic Oregon Improvement Com pany In Trouble. Special to Tup. Astoria.1 New York, Nov. 24. It was stated to-day, and not denied at the com pany's office, that the Oregon Im provement Company would to-morrow apply to have Joseph Simon ap pointed receiver. The appointment will be made at Portland, Or. It is stated that the in terest due December 1st will not be paid, and tho company's trouble is said to be due to the fact that loans, which it procured to carry on work on its extensions, have been called in and the company is unable to pay them. The president of tho company, Elijah Smith, is said to bo seriously ill and confined to his home. The properties controlled by the company comprises the Pacific Coast Steamship Company, operating five lines on tho Northern Pacific coast, several railways and a largo amount of coal lands and real estate. At the close of the last fiscal year the company's liabilities amounted to 18,007,087, offset on balance sheet by an equal amount of assets. Since then the company has authorized and executed a consolidated mortgage of 615,000,000 of which 6,314,000 was reserved to rotiro prior issues and pre ferred stock. It is stated that the company is solv ent, but owing to the condition of the money market, the officers deem it best for all interested to have a re ceiver appointed. THE SCARE SUBSIDING. Indian Troubles In Dakota Are About Over. Special to The AstoriaiM MinneapomsNov. 24. A JournaVs Pierre South Dakota special says: "This is ration day at Cheyenne Agency and the Indians are congregat ing there in large numbers. The scare is subsiding and Indian Agent Norvill, who has just returned from the Bad Biver country, says the Indians there are abandoning the dances." Omaha, Nov. 24. The latest advices from the Pine Bidge agency are to the effect that the Indians continue to bring in their squaws and children, which is taken as a sure sign by the army people that there will be no fighting at that point. It was supposed that the trouble between the two hundred and fifty Chinese, who worked during the past season in Alaska canneries and who were de frauded out of their earnings, and sev eral Chinese firms had been settled, but such is not the case and mora trouble is liable to take place at any time. . A meeting of the Chines seven companies wa3 held yesterday, but nothing definite was de cided upon. The laborers are clamor ing for their money und threaten to loot several stores and kill those who oppose them. "W., alias Fred "Whitfield, his brothers were in custody as acces sories. The weapon used was a sand bag, and the California authorities, fearful that they cannot make the charge stick against the two last named, desired to know if the brothers were wanted here. Chief Barry wired in such a manner as will enable the California officers to hold the men long enough for them to complete the working up of the case against them. The brothers are notorious crooks and a strong suspicion exists that they were implicated in the murder of Crosby of Tacoma. MARINE NEWS AND NOTES. She is from Tillamook with a cargo of salmon. The steamship Columbia arrived in from San Francisco yesterday morn ing with a large passenger list and the usual freight list.
