compiled, show that the political
standing of the house of representa
tives in the fifty-second congress will
be 222 democrats, 92 republicans and
seventeen fanners' alliance. On a
straight ballot this would give the
democrats 130 more votes than the
republicans, but as, of the seventeen
alliance men twelve are from the
South and would, probably vote with
the democrats, this would give the
latter 142 over the republicans, or 13i
majority over the republicans and the

It is indeed strange how some people
can always take pleasure in saying
mean and erroneous things concerning

Full of bitterness and malice must be
the heart of the man who has no kind
words for a fellow man, but whose
entire conversation or writing is of a
scurrilous or villifving nature. To
such a one it would seem that the sun
was dark, the earth had lost its
beauty, the brilliancy of the stars was
obscured, the sweetest flowers were
void of fragrance, everything appeared
shrouded in gloom and all was dark
and drear as an Arctic winter. Such
n person is a moral dyspeptic, and
bis mind is very bilious and appar
ently incapable of mental digestion.
God pity those in that condi
tion! Even the lowest of earth's
mortals turn with pity and contempt
from the man or woman whose sole
aim appears to be casting wormwood
and gall in the path of others, more
favored by forlnuc or blessed with
mental qualifications than their own

A man well known In this community
writes the following interesting letter:
"1 was chopping a stump four weeks
aco. when a flying chin struck me in
the eye; for a short time 1 was entirely
blind. Then partial sight returned
again. I nurtured nope and continued
to treat it at home, until ten days ago,
when I began to abandon hope of ever
seeing perfectly again, unless some
thing more than ordinary was done.
1 tlien counciled two of the leading
Oculists of Portland, who told me one
eye would have to be cut out to save
the other. It did not exactly suit me to
have my eye cut out, and so I sought
other council. I went to Dr. Prentice,
the Oculist, then at Portland, and he
laughed at the idea of its being neces
sary to cut my eye out; I joined in the
laugh, for it was on ray side. 1
have been free from pain since the first
day's visit to Dr. Prentice, and im
proved steadilj', and am now entirely
well again. I feel safe in saying that if
Dr. Prentice cannot cure a case he will

A. Touching Scene Witnessed By a Portland
Gentleman.
One week ago we received an invita
tion to witness a delicate surgical oper
ation on an eye. 'I he patient was the
17-year-old daughter of Harrison Hay.
Tor three years she had been blind in
both eyes with a cataract, and was
obliged to grope her way about in total
darkness. The patient, without taking
chloroform, submitted to the following
operation : fche was now ready for the
surgical part of the work, and we stood
in breathless anxiety as Dr. Prentice
placed the point of his knife at the
side of the eyeball, carefully touched
the point of the cornea, then the blade
entered the eye; e saw it pass through
the eye in front of the pupil and then
come out at the opposite side. It was
then drawn upward, and a cut made of
about one-third of the circumference of
the ball. Another instrument was then
passed in back of the pupil, and almost
on the instant the girl said: "Oh, Dr.
Prentice 1 can see j-ou." This was
spoken in tones well calculated to bring
tears lo one's eyes. From the time
the knife touched the eye until the
patient could see, it was just one min
ute. She was allowed to see those
about her for a moment, then the eye
was closed and bandaged.
In just one week after the operation
she came into our office and was able to
read our paper. She also wrote a letter
home, saying; "Dear parents, I can
see and am happv."

Portland, Or., Oct. 7, 1890.
To the Suffering: For five years I
have suffered, witu sleeplessness, ner
vous debility, irritation at the base of
the brain, and a terrible kidney disease.
I had tried so many remedies that did
me no good that at last 1 gave up all
hope of ever being a well man again. I
tried many prescriptions that were
said tote sure cures, and all failed.
There were many times during the
past few years that I was obliged to lay
off from work from two weeks to three
months at a time. Lately 1 was run
ning down in health very rapidly, and
was alarmed. I contemplated leaving
thispaitof the country and trying to
see if I could not get relief elsewhere.
I must say that my faith in doctors was
about gone; hut something lead me to

I crowded in with the others and
waited my turn, lie examined me, told
me where my trouble was, and said he
could cure it without m dicine. I can't
say that I really believed him, but
something in his manner led me to
trust him. lie gave me no medicine at
all, yet from the day of my first visit I
began to improve rapidly. I now sleep
as sound as a child. My memory is
greatly improved. My kidney disease
and brain irritation are entirely well,
my appetite splendid, and 1 now enjo3r
life and perfect health. Any afflicted
