"Going up and coming down" is often illustrated in the career of in dividuals in Ibis country, and a casein point wliicli furnishes a practical illustration is givon in the change of presidency of the Union Pacific, "whareiu Jay Gould succeeds Charles Fraacis Adams. "When thelatter was considered a literary man and a re former and was acting as a govern mant director of railroads, ho censured the railroad officials who were getting rich out of their positions, and strongly criticised Gould's management of Erie. In the course of time the latter, being well aware of the ability, as well as ihe social standing of Adams, as a descendant of a presidential family, place,! him in the chair of the presi dency of the Union Pacific. Time rolls on, and the grand things which were expected of Adams failed to materialize. Before ho was presi dent he maintained that the road should pay its indebtedness to the people and the government, but after assumiug the office'his views appeared to linve undergone a change, and his administration was about like that of all olbcrs in a similar position. Mean while Gould sold his stock in the road, but now he has bought in again. Time rolls on again, and the scene onco more changes. Adams vacates the chair and Gould occupies it. Thus, in the short space of a fow years these two men change places, and the one who was so sharply criticized now be come the critic and stigmatizerof the other. Read the following remarks recoally made by Gould: "Charles Francis Adams will ceaso to le president, lie has been managing the property after a fashion which sets bnsiiio.'v? wholly at naught. Under his direction the t'niou Pacific, more than any other railroad in the West, has dis tttrtKHl and upset harmony, knocked down rates and forced tho handling of business without proflt.' How much better the new president will do, remaius to bo seen, and tho rerolviug wheels of Time's chariot will not have made many revolutions ore the tenor of his administration will bo manifested and his policy out lined. rIajiBEUs of tho San Francisco logal fraternity are noted for their rapaciousuess and big fees. They also appear to bo a little greedy in the way of financial failure, as is attested by a dispatch, which states that Harvey S. Brown, one of tho shining legal lights of tho city of corporations and corruption, has failed, and his liabil ities amount to $172,000. How a San Francisco lawyer could get into debt to that amount is almost inconceiva ble, but then tho most of his creditors aro brother attorneys, tho mystery is easier solved. "We -want more greenbacks," not us of Astoria, bat the people of the specu lative East This fact lias dawned upon the administration, and a dis patch says that the powers at "Wash ington are Iryiuj; to figure out a plan .whereby the circulating medium can bs increased and "Black" days in Wnll street become a thing of the past. Gamfohxia, in addition to being called the Golden state, has a new tiUe,'The Paradise o Prize Fight ers,' -which may bo tacked on, as ono of the higher courts in that state has decided that a contest in an athletic club room does not como within the statute prohibiting prize fighting. Those Who WIh to IUto the Doctor Treat Them Should Call Early, or Ther Say Lose the Opportunity. A man well known In this community writes the following interesting letter: "1 was chopping a stnmp four weeks ago, when a flying chip struck me in the eye; for a short time I was entirely blind. Then partial sight returned again. I nurtured nope and continued to treat it at home, until ten days ago, when I began to abandon hope of ever seeing perfectly again, unless some thing more than ordinary was done. 1 then counciled two of the leading Oculists of Portland, who told me one eye would have to be cut out to save the other. It did not exactly suit me to have my eye cut out, and so I sought other council. I went to Dr. Prentice, the Oculist, then at Portland, and be laughed at the idea of its being neces sary to cut my eye out; I joined in tho laugh, for it was on my side. 1 have been free from pain since the first day's visit to Dr. Prentice, and im proved steadily, and am now entirely well again. I feel safe In saying that if Dr. Prentice cannot cure a case he will always say so. Tnos. II. Foss, Gray's River, Wash. A Touching Scene Witnessed By a Portland Gentleman. One week ago we received an invita tion to witness a delicate surgical oper ation on an eye. '1 be patient was the 17-year-old daughter of Harrison Hay. For three 3'cars she bad been blind in both eyes with a cataract, and was obliged to grope her way about in total darkness. The patient, without taking chloroform, submitted to the following operation : bhc was now ready for the surgical part of the work, and we stood in breathless anxiety as Dr. Prentice placed the point of his knife at tho side of the eyeball, carefully touched the point of the cornea, then the blade entered the eye; we saw it pass through the ej'o in front of the pupil and then come out at the opjvosite side. It was then drawn upward, and a cut made of about one-third of the circumference of the ball. Another instrument was then passed in back of the pupil, and almost on the instant the girl said: "Oh, Dr. Prentice 1 can see you." This was spoken in tones well calculated to bring tears to one's eyes. From tho time the knife touched the eye until the patient could sec, it was jusfc one min ute. She was allowed to see those about her for a moment, then tho eye was closed and bandaged. In just one week after tho operation she came into our office and was able to read our paper. She also wrote a letter home, saying; "Dear parents, I can see and am happy." Mr. Jerome W. Campbell. General Superintendent of the Willamette Bridge Railway Co., saw this operation. A LETTER. From a Tatient Who Was Cured Br Br. Prentice. Portland, Or., Oct 7, 1890. To Vie Suffering: For five years 1 have suffered witn sleeplessness, ner vous debility, irritation at the base of the brain, and a terrible kidney disease. 1 had tried so many remedies that aid me no Rood that at last 1 gave up all hope of ever being a well man again. I tried many prescriptions that -were said to be sure cures, and all failed. There were many times during the past few years that I was obliged to lay off from work from two weeks to three months at a time. Lately 1 was run ning down in health very rapidly, and was alarmed. I contempla'ed leaving thispaitof tho country and trying to see it E could not get relief elsewhere. I must say that my faith in doctors was about gone; but something lead mo to visit Dr. Prentice at tho Esmond hotel. I crowded in with tho others and waited my turn, lie examined me, told me where my trouble was, and said he could cure it without m diclnc. I can't say that I really believed him, but something in his manner led me to trust him. lie gave me no medicine at all, yet from tho day of my first visit I began to improve rapidly. I now sleep as sound as a child. My memory is greatly improved. My kidney disease and brain irritation aro entirely well, my appetite splendid, and 1 now enjoy lite and perfect health.
