August 6th, 180. 1 VoVol Sheriff Smiti is InterrtBrt ly An "flrepian" R'epris?. . Till: JIUS'CO KELLY CASK AGAfX. The impression previ.il in Porilaml thai. A-toria citizcbs and rfliciais are prejudices! ngaiust Portland sailor boarding fconsc keeiiers in general and "Bunko" Kelly in particular. Sheriff Smith -was interviewed there and in yesterdaj'js Urcyonian appears the folio wiug acceunt: Sheriff H. A. Smith, cf Astoria, was in town yesterday and lelt last night for home. He will come up again to-night with the two witnesses de sired here in the examination of "Bunko" Kelly before Jndgo Deady. Their names are Alfred Annstroun and William Kelly. Mr. Smith wa3 talking to a reporter yesterda3-, and claims that a false im pression has been created to the effect that he is allied with the sailor boarding-house gang of Astoria. Ho also denies that the sailor boarding-house people had put up the job to have Kelly arrested by arranging for a shanghai story to bo made up. Mr. Smith says that the Asioria boarding-house people had no knowl edge whatever, of the arrest of Kelly. It was at 5 o'clock last Saturday that he was called aboard the Noddlcbwn to see the sailor Kelly, and Kelly told him that ho had been unfairly dealt with, and so the sheriff took him back to see the captain. When the captain had heard his story, he grew out of patience with his sailor, and told him ho had better go. So Sheriff Smith took him to jail, and gave orders to his jailor not to allow any one to see him. Theso instructions, Air. Smith says, have been carried out to the letter, and nouo of tho Astoria gang, so called, have been near Kelly sinco he was put in jail, or anybody else. Commenting upon Officer John Byrnes's testimony before Judge Deady, Mr. Smith says that while Byrnes swore thatKelly and Armstrong signed articles, as a matter of fact they did not but that iielly was to assume the name of ono Putman and Armstrong some Italian name agreed upon. He says also that Officer Stuart acted in a very obstrepous manner in the court room at Astoria, essaying to instruct both the court and the prosecuting attorney in their duties. "There is no truth," said Sheriff Smith, "in the accusation that I have been encouraging or in any way standing in with tho boarding house people there. "When I was deputy marshal I brought more men to an swer for irregular proceedings than any man ever holding that office, and I am now at loggerheads with tho whole outfit I haye no favors to pay back to anybody, and am simply try ing to do my official duty in this matter. I am positive, also, that the Astoria boarding houso people had no hand in this last offense of "Bunko" KellyV. "It has been charged by iveiiy and printed in tho papers, that I used him with unwarranted roughness in taking him from the lail to Astoria. Kelly was very abusive and used the most disgraceful language to me both in the jail and on the boat. It was nec essary for me, therefore, to fasten him to a log chain on the lower deck. Tho cell he complains of being thrown into at Astoria wes not a cell. It was a nice room, with windows on four sides, well furnished with a bedroom set, washstand, eta" A PRE3IIU3I.TO SUBSCRIBERS.
