It says: "The demonstration, which Tam many has been affording during the past 3'ear, that it js possible and even easy for a club of obscuro and illiterate adventurers and criminals to seize and hold the government of a great Chris tian capital in tho year 1890, purely for the purpose of official plunder, is a matter of the deepest moment, not only to the state of New York, bnt to the wholo nation. If the citizens are beaten at the polls to-morrow in New York, it will send a thrill of hope and encouragement through the vicious and criminal population of every city in the Anglo-Saxon world." The Commercial Advertiser, in nu editorial on the eve of the election, finds Tammany scared, and, as tas said in tho Commercial a few days ago, Tammany scared is Tammany beaten. Interest in Tacoma. President Harrison, accompanied by Attorney General Miller left over the Pennsyl vania road for his home in Indianapo lis at 10 o'clock thi3 morning. The president is expected to return on Wednesday. The Carpet Factory Burned Second Time. Special to The Astomak.J Philadelphia, Not. 3. For Iho second timo in six months Samnel W. "White's carpet and rug mill atPront street and Columbia avemie was de stroyed by fire tin's morning. The whole structure was burned on July 3rd and he was going to resume work to night after having rebuilt it, when the mill was again burned. The conflagration started in the basement which was filled with dye, drug and ingrain carpet yarns on which the hnnds were to commence work. The fire is supposed lo'have been due to spontaneous combustion. That portion of tho mill burned was used for niakiug carpets and about seven ly-five men and women employed there. All escaped. The mur der of "Wing Choy, the highbinder, Saturday night was followed by another this morning, when Bak Ngoy was fatally shot and He Choy Pne was badly beaten about Hie head and arms. The petitioner demurred to Sheriff Smith's return forirregphriticTin-rlie commitment, Tho demurrer was over ruled, and the court held it had au thority to examine witnesses to ascer tain the facts in the case. A fire broke out at 2:45 o'clock this morning in the paint shop of Heuter Brothers & Co., under thcBurlinglou housc,next lo the Grand hotel. It soon spread to the the basement of the hotel and great clouds of smoke belched out from the windows. Several streams -were turned on at that point, but tho fire was such a blind one that tho firemen could not locate it. The smoke penetrated throughout the hotel and the guests were all aroused and fled, many in their night clothes; others sought refuge in the Palace hotel. It was not longbefore the flames had worked their way up tho elovh'tor shafts to the attic, and- in a few minutes the roof oT the hotel was ablaze. Two firemen rescued two ladies who had fainted through excitement. The lire continued to burn furiously nnlil about 8:30 o'clock this morning, when it was pronounced under control. At that time the Burlington was but a shell, the floors had fallen one after another, the partitions were gone and it was a total loss. The Bnrlington , was owned by the estate of Sclim A. i Woodwortlr, and'the heirs at one time offered it to the Sharon estate for 90,000. bnt tho offer was refused. ' . Furniture and labor saving devices and a general stock in Slemin & Co., was destroyed. The stores of C- Hirst dealer in millinery goods; O. Down ing, druggist; E. Marwsdel," window shade manufacturer, were all gutted. Heuter Bros, are probably the larg est sufferere. Their stock of paints, oils, and varnishes was almost entirely destroyed by fire and water, aud the loss is variously estimated at from 50,000 to 75,000. Hill & Goldman, druggists' supplies, had a. stock of about S3.000. They loso S2.500. John H. Danton, trunkmakcr; lost S1,000. Water did the principal damage, and the loss to the drugs in tho cellar and damage done by water in the store will-be S6,000. As the steamship Oregon sailed from tho wharf jesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Liberati's famous military band, which was on board, played some of their choicest pieces' as fhe vessel passed the docks. The express train that left New York on theDeleware & Lacawanna Kailway .this morning, while desending a steep grado near a rock cpt three miles from this city, crashed into a coal train standing on a switch and waiting for the track to be cleared for its passage south. Both engines were completely wrecked and the baggago and mail cars were crushed. Of the other cars on the train, four in number, three were thrown from the track by the force of the collision, turning them into position at right angles with the rails. A single Pullman car which was next the mail car kept its place. Michael Burke of this city, engineer on the passenger train, 'and J. W. Doyle, of Great Bend, engineer of the coal train were killed with their fire men Jerry Lee, of this city, and Mor ton Fernon of Great Bend. There are 1,579 members. which would averago 1.90 each, and this chamber's share of the assessment would be 123:50for the year, payable semi-annually in advance, or 61.75 now, and a like payment six months hence. It was moved that the assess ment be paid, bnt was amended to re fer the entire subject to C. W. Eulton, one of the vice presidents of the state board. Moved by M. J. Kinney that the secretary be required to gather and keep a record of the imports and ex ports of the port, kind and value of the cargo, depth of .water drawn by vessels, and all such necessary in formation,' and be paid for his services. The motion was adopted. It was moved by Samuel Elmore that tho secretary bo paid 100 per month for his services. The "inde pendent oil companies of Northern Ohio, which are now forming a com bination to protect themselves against the Standard company, threw down the gauntlet to the big monopoly this morning through the Manhattan, the strongest ot the independent com panies, by advancing the price of Buck eye oil from thirty cents a barrel to thirty-two cents. Tho Domin ion government has decided to adopt a vigorous foreign trade policy, now that tho McFanley bill will divert Canadian trade from the states. It has been decided to take immediate steps to promote closer trade relations between Canada and the "West Indies. Hon. George E. Foster, niinister of finance, goes to the West Indies this week on a mission. He will visit Barbadoes and Trinidad, Jamaica, the Bahamas and Bermuda. His mission, it is expected, will result, suc cessfully, as the government has given him considerable authority to discuss trade relations. SltlAlilPOX ON BOARD. The steam ship Belgravia from Mediterranean ports arrived here this morning with .over 1,000 Italians and other immi grants aboard. She anchored off Quarantine Island and the captain re fused to allow the revenue officers to board, stating there was small pox among the passencers. There was. very little fighting done injthe first seven rounds. MARINE NEWS AND NOTE3. The steam schooner Bertie Minor, Capt. F. O. Raven, sailed for San Erancisco with a cargo of lumber yes terday. The steamship Oregon sailed for San Francisco yestorday. Among other cargo taken from here were 250 sacks of oysters. She had been stuck on St. Helens bar for 24 hours. Tho deck of the new pilot schooner San Jose is being torn away and car penters are at work refitting the vessel. She is at Flavel's wharf, and is to have a much more commodious cabin. It was nearly noon yesterday when the steamship Oregon, Oapt. Polemann , which left Portland last Saturday night, reached this city. The Oregon is a fast vessel but it took her 38 hours to make 110 miles. The necessary stops made on sand bars, must, however, be taken into consideration. The underwriters expected down from Portland yesterday to survey the steam schooner Michigan, did not come. About noon instructions were received for the vessel to go to Port land for survey and about 3 o'clock steam was gotten up and the Michi gan left for the inland city. The British ships Mount Carmel and Principality have entered at the custom house. They will finish tak ing in cargo here and sail for the?" United Kingdom in a few days.
