J. .Tack and his talented wife, Annie Firmin, at an early date, as they have many f nends here who have been highly entertained by them in days gone by and would be pleased to again see them on the stage here. Mrs. M. H. Ellis, president of the Ladies' Missionary Society of, Oregon, addressed the congregation in the Congregational church last evening in the interest of the society. The lady is an able and fluent talker and this evening will meet the members of the Ladies' Aid Society and members of the church at the residence of Rev. Dr. Hall. E. J. Ford, of this city, exhibited a handsome specimen of semi-bituminous coal yesterday. It came from a claim recently located by Mr. Ford on what is known as coal creek in the Nehalem. The vein, Mr. Ford stales, measures thirty-two inches in width but its depth was not ascertained. The find of Mr. Ford is considered by experts to be a very valuable one. SheriffSmith of thisconnty, who took the famons shanghaier, "Bunco" Kelly to Portland last Friday night returned with his prisoner yesterday morning, and left again last evening for the inland metropolis. On arriving in Portland the sheriff took Kelly before the United States district court and made return on the writ of habeas corpus as announced in The Astoriak. The hearing of the matter was con tinued until to-morrow, and as "Bunco's" friends would not put up 2,009 necessary to secure "Bunco's" appearance, the sheriff handcuffed him and brought him here for a day's visit The West Shore has made marked improvements in its style and size during the past j ear, and it is now everywhere recognized as one of the leading illustrated papers of the country. It is prospering so well that a fine building is being erected by the company to meet the demand for in creased faculties lor transacting busi ness and getting out the paper. It will be in its new quarters early in the year, and further improvements will then be made in the paper. This publication is so representative of the growing northwest and so thoroughly identified with the progress of the country that every one ought to take it regularly. Special inducements, interesting to everyone who reads, are offered by H'cst Shore for subscrip tions. Apply to the postmaster for important paniculars. At the M E. church last evening llev. G. W Grannis delivered a very interesting sermon on "Noah, the Alan or uoeaience," wiucii was listened to by a large audience. Res cue hall, where the meeting was held, being well filled. Noah was com mended as a just and faithful man, preaching for 120 years in the midst of a sinful people, and during all that time was unable to convert any, and yet the ministers of the present day, though converting thousands are not possessed of the fervor and zeal which actuated that glorious man. The teachings and doctrines of Wesley have been instrumental in saving over 5,000,000 people, and even with all this splendid result there is not the faith and obedience to God's teach ings which Noah manifested in the darkness of the sinful people who sur rounded him, the light of whbse brill iant devotion and piety shines brightly upon us to-day. through all the long centuries which have intervened since the davs of his existence. John Jack, Annie Fir mi u, and Arthur Firmin Jack, are the names of three persons who signed at-the Occi dent hotel yesterday Tand they recall to Astorians show days of old. It was way back in the years of 1875-6 that the Jacks held forth in this city in old Liberty hall. The price of ad mission was four bits or fifty cents, but if the seeker after amusement did not have the price a salmon was good for a 'ticket and several hundred of the finny beauties found their way into the box office each night. It was the same as cash to the management for they were delivered to the can neries the next day at full value. "Those were good old days," said Mr. Jack yesterday, "and the treat ment we received in Astoria has en deared me to the place." "Yc3, there have been many changes", and I am glad to see that all of them are for the better." , ' "I think I will take up a residence here, and do circuit work with this as headquarters." One hundred and fifty thousand feet of logs went out to tide water last Thursday, through the effects of Sal dren'sdam. E. Z. Ferguson, of Astoria, is here for a few days on business, looking for a location for a terminus of a trans continental railroad. Let every young man who has a vote in this precinct cast it in favor of the school house bonds. The building will be a credit to the town, and your vote will materially assist m its erection. The many friends of Mr. O. A. Bowen will regret to learn that ill health has compelled him to -resign from theregisterehip of the Vancouver land office. Ex-Senator John D. Geoghegan succeeds him. E. Cornell will close his logging operation next week. He has put 300,000 feet in tide water end 800,000 feet in Wilson creek. The quality of the output is far above average. The head sawyer, Mr. Vinson, who has been engaged in the business for seventeen years, pronounces the logs as far above average. One tree yielded 24,715 feet of marketable lum ber, the bulk of which was clear stuff. Frank Spittle, of Astoria, who has been engaged in making a set of ab stract books of this county, for the Frankfort Abstract and Title Com pany, completed his arduous duties last Saturday and left on the Thomp son Sunday night for Cedar Landing, where he goes to spend a few dajs preparatory to going over to Oyster ville to take a transcript of the records of Pacific count. Hon. Thad Huston, of Tacoma. and Judge Kallaban, of Kalama, spoke to a fair sized audience Monday night The address was listened to with marked attention. Mr. Huston is a stalwart republican and made an able argument on his parry's position on the tariff, pension law and Lodge bill. The meeting was closed by Judge Kallahan, in an able but short speech, interspersed with amusing anecdotes, which convulsed the audi ence with laughter. F. M Warren is removing the snags from his seining grounds on Wallace's island by hydraulic pressure. A diver goes down and locates the snag. A line is then made fast to the scow from the snag. A powerful pump, with a tremendous pressure, forces a stream of water .through a rubber hose, which the diver takes down with him to clear away the sand and dirt that surrounds the snag. This being done, it takes very little ef fort to remove the snag. It is almost impossible to rig direct leverage enough to extract one of these snags that are deeply buried in the sand without first loosening the dirt that surrounds them. This is one of the best natural seining grounds on the Columbia river, and when entirely freed from snags will be still more valuable for fishing purposes. ... ST. HELEN'S ITEMS. From the "Oregon 3IM" of Thursday. October 31, 1890. A number of strangers are to bo seen in St Helens this week. All the boats are crowded with pas sengers. Freight traffic is also large. Muckle Bros.' mill is now the scene of much activity. Aside from the loading of a largo vessel, many teams are to be seen hauling lumber to dif ferent points throughout the county. Mount St Helens, with her snow capped peak, presents a striking con trast between the agreeable atmos phere on the Columbia and that in the vicinity of this famous old sentinel of the Cascades. The Mist wants to see Oregon prop erly represented at the world's fair. Her resources are abundant, and she deserves a prominent place m which to exhibit herself. By all means the legislature, when considering the amount of money to be appropriated for this purpose, should be liberal but not extravagant As the old farmer said to his wife, t4If we go to the fair at all, let's go in our best rig." And we would add, to some purpose. On Tuesday morning word was re ceived hero that a man stole a gray horse in Portland, and embarked with it qq one of tho boats touching at this plaoo, where he landed, and thinking the Nehalem mountains would be more oongenial to him, struck out with the animal in that direction. "We have not been advised as to whether he had been captured or not He was sighted by several persons, and seemed quite indifferent to tho prob able outcome of this mode of dealing in horseflesh. The venerable R. S. Fuljerton, of Gillton, was iu town Monday. During a conversation with him, we learn that he came to Columbia county in 1852, when but a few white people were here. He is one of those men who is well acquainted with the early history of the county and atato, and of whom we expect to learn something of in terest for publication in the future. He is one of a few of tho pioneers of that year who are now left to enjoy the comforts in old age afforded by a competency obtained during a life of frugality and self-denial in the pioneer days of the great state of Oregon. Report Tliat It was Burning Seme Time Before Discovered THE VESSEL AT THE V ITAJiF. The steam schooner Michigan, which arrived from the -Sound last Saturday with a fire in her hold was hauled iu alongside the Union Pacific wharf yesterday and tied up to await survey by the underwriters' agents who are expected to arrive from Port land on a special steamer to-day. Early yesterday morning tho membera of No. One engine company, who were engaged throughout the night in pumping out tho water that had been poured into the vessel left her and returned to their engine house carrying with them the thanks of Captain Graves, master of tho vessel. The steamer presents a sorry picture and when one looks down the for ward hatch and sees the charred and blackened timbers, it-is easy to im agine the great peril those on board wero in, when sailing on tho ocean in a Avooden ship, with fire under their feet. Iu connection with the fire thero were several rumors afloat yesterday. One was to the eflect that the tire had been burning a number of hours before it was discovered. One mem ber of the crew is credited with hav ing said that he smelled smoke before the ship passed Cape Flattery, and reported it, but to whom it does not transpire. Captain Graves, master of the Michigan says he heard nothing of this, and does not believe the story. As stated in The Astoriax yester dey the case salmon and lime will be a total loss, while other portious of the cargo suffered from the effects of water, there being, when the local fire department extinguished the fire some nine or ten feet of water in the hold. MARINE NEWS AND NOTES. The little ship City of Carlisle left for Portland yesterday. Tho schooner Maggie C. Jiuss left up the river for Portland yesterday. Captain J. H. D. Gray returned yesterday from a flying trip to Portland. The Gen. Miles arrived in from Shoalwater bay yesterday and left up the river for Portland. The schooner liertie Minor ar rived down from Portland vesterdav. She is lumber Laden for San Fran cisco. A. P. Sharpsteiu, manager of the Electric Motor Company, left for Port land last evening on business in con nection with tho road. The steamship Columhia arrived from San Francisco yesterday morn ing with a number of passengers and thirty-seven tons of freight. No new developments have occurred in the matter of tho three men on board the British ship Principality, who,it is alleged, were shanghaied iu Portland. The steamship 'Oregon, schednled to sail for San Francisco from this city yesterday, had not arrived down at a late hour last night and it is un derstood that she is stuck in the mnd on St Helens bar. The American bark Culoma left down the river yesterday en route to China and Japan. She carries a number of cabiu passengers and seventy-six Chinese. It is not known whether she crossed out last evening, as shortly after leaviug a heavy fog set in. HE 1VAS ASHA3IED To Ask. Again, bat Ills Frank I,cttnr Got It for Ilim.
