Oct. 27, 1S00 The Population of tlic United States Is 02,480,540. Special to The Astoriak-1 "Washikgton, Oct. 3L A bulletin issued to-day on the population of the United States says: The population of the United: States on June 1st 1890, as shown by a first count, exclusive of whites in Indian territory, Indians on the reservations and in Alaska, is 62, 480,510. These figures may be slightly changed by later computa tions. In 1880 the population was 50.155, 783. The absolute increase in ten years is 12,324,750; percentage of in crease is 24.57. In 1870 the popula tion was stated at 38,558,371. Accord ing to these figures the absolute in crease between 1870 and 1880 was 11, 587,412, the percentage of increase be ing 30.08. Upon their face these figures show that the population ha3 increased be tween 1880 and 1890 only -727,345 more than between 1870 and 1880, while the rate of increase has apparently diminished from 30.03 to 24.75 per cent. If these figures wero derived from a correct date they would be dis appointing, as such a reduction in the iface of "the enormous immigration during the past ten years would argtro as great a diminution in the fesundity of the population, or a corresponding increase in the death rate. These figures however, are easily explained when the character of the data is understood. It is a well known fact, having been demonstrated by extensive and thorough investiga tion, that tho census of 1870 was grossly deficient in the southern states, so much so as not only to give an exaggerated rate of the increase of tho population between 1870 and 18S0 in thoso states, but to affect very ma terially tho rate of increase in tho country at large.
