Tbo uavj' yard and dry dock com
missioners are paying a great deal of
attention to Port Orchard, and their
recent action would indicate that the
navy yard and dry dock might ulti
mately be located there.
In a talk had yesterday with C. N.
Noyes, hotel keener at Trncylon, ho
said that on Thursday last, A. F.
Shiou'e of the Kitsap county Pioneer
notifled him and other land owners
that the commissioners desired to
meet them the next day at 31 o'clock
on board the Manzanita.
At the appointed hour on Friday the
land owners were on board the Man
zanita. They were met by the com
missioners and Capt. Sclfridge made a
speech to the assemblage, stating that
the government desired to bond the
land which was bonded last year for a
navy yard which amounted to about
1,700 acres; also that it was the desire
to bond some more land in the vicin
ity of lake Kitsap.
In all. some 2,400 acres were to bo
bonded. The commission appointed
A.F1. Shroufeasits representative to
appraise the land which it proposed to
bond. The settlers appointed Sheriff
Joseph Pitts to represent their inter
ests and the two gentlemen named
called Joseph Blakeley in to assist
them in their labors. By this time
the land is about all bonded.
Among those who bonded their land
to the government are M. Daily, who
bonded 1G0 acres at S100 an
acre; Warren Smith, 203 acres
at $100 an acre; Howard
Kimball, bonded his land for S10 an
acre, Skymen Bros, at S25 per acre
and others at different prices.
In no instance was any money paid
to the settlers. The bonds hold for a
period of two years, but it does not
prevent those who have bonded the
land from selling to a third party pro
vided it is made subject to the bond.
The commissioners have spent consid
erable time in the vicinity of Port
Orchard in the past seven or eight
days, and it looks very much as though
they aro determined to strongly rec
ommend Port Orchard as the site for
the navy yard and dry docks. Seattle
