TO STOCK WAERENDALE HATCHERY
The Government Blamed for a Short
Season at Clackamas Hatchery.
State Fish Commissioner Keed
leaves this morning for tho Clackamaa
batcbery to get from 800,000. to 500,
000 salmon eggs, which he trill take
to the branch hatchery at Warrendale
this evening.
"The season's catch," said Commis
sioner Keed to a reporter yesterday,
"will not exceed 3,000,000 eggs. Had
the dam and rock been put in early in
theeason, as it should have been, wo
couia have secured 10,000,000 eggs
just as well as 3,000,000. The expense
would not have been any more.
"The blame lies with the govern
ment in not making the appropriation
for hatchery repairs in time. The
dam should have been built by the 1st
of May, whereas wo did not get tho
money until the lsl of July. The en
tire cost was not over S200, while the
loss in fish through thi3 delay can
scarcely be estimated. Tho govern
ment's shortsighted policy in not at
tending to the business in lime will
prove a serious loss to the state.
Moreover, Oregon and "Washington
are now without a government fish
commissioner. Commissioner Stone,
who was hero for a time has gone, and
no one has been sent to take his place.
If the government cannot afford to
give Oregon and "Washington a fish
commissioner, it might just as well
give up the effort in the direction of
artificial propagation entirely. The
people should demand a government
fish commissioner, and there is enough
for him to do here too." Oregonian,

Fond memory holds to our view a bright
mirror;
That gives on its surface each pleasure
that's cone;
And still as we look wo behold them grow
clearer,
Until once again we're 'midst scenes
that are flown.
O, memory, dearest of all earthly treas
ures,
How sweet are the draughts that we
joyously suo.
Though bitter is sometimes mixed in
with our pleasures,
It mokes by the contrast tho sweeter
tho cup.
"We have parted with friends, aye, per
haps a fond mother
Has left this dark world for a brighter
above;
But, Oh, she has left that which time
cannot smother,
Tho dear reccollection, a fond mother's
love.
How sweet was our youth when we clung
to that mother,
And thought her so near that we never
could rjart:
But ono disappointment crowds close on
another,
Till griefs overwhelmingly delugo the
heart.
But Hope, Oh, tho pleasures of Hope,
now tnoy lighten
The burden of griefthrough this dark
solitude!
Ob, pleasures of Hope, how divinely
they brighten
Our path to that world where no ills'
can intrude.
