Through the efforts of Dr. August Kinney and others interested in prop erty along the line, the old militarv road from Upper Astoria to the Wal lnski f"rry has been opened up and is now passable for horseback travel. This tnul has the advantage of being a good trail in winter when the county road to the Walluski would be im l"issabl, A nioat interesting book is "The History of Utah,'' by H. H. Bancroft, ll.e historian. It is published by the H.sion Compnny, San Francisco. As a literary work, it is like all other of Mr. Bancroft's, exhaustive oa the sub ject and highly ontertaining. The Jclterpress is fine and the binding sub sisntial and attractive. The book will ho of value and an ornament to anv library. Tnn AsToniAx's collection of agri cultural specimens was increased by the addition of a sweet potato brought m the Nehalern by J. J. Stokes. It :s ll1- inches long, 1G inches in cir cumference and weighs nearly 5 pounds. It is said that tobacco leaves i: that section attain a length of three or fonr feet, so there seems to be nothing to hinder the residents there from eating big sweet potatoes and cokmg long cigars, if they wish. W. B. Tarye. of Jewell, was in the A josterday. He found the road from Jewell to Olney in a very bad foio. The travel over the road since the necat rains has rendered some of t almost bottomless. Elmore" Arrives From Alask VIOLATED C UST03T IIO VSE It XJT.E The little steamer R. I Elmore, which has been expected to arrive from Alaska for some time past, put in an appearance early yesterday morning before the customs officers were about and put ashore thirty-one Chinese, which fact is liable to get the master, Captain James Tatten, into trouble. The vessel, m stress of weather, put into Nanaimo, B. C. on the way down, and the customs officers hold that her doing so made her for eign bound and the captain violated tho exclusion act in landing the Chi nese without their having been passed on by the federal officials. It is prob able that an investigation will bo held to-day or to-morrow. The little vessel had a very rough trip of it, encountering both tho heavy gales that prevailed on the northern coast during the past week. The Chi nese, all of whom, it is claimed, have been at work at the canneries, had a very rough experience. Their quar ters were in tho forward hold of the steamer, which is very small, and dur iug the galas it was necessary to close the hatchwav. As a consequence sev eral of the Pagans were nearly suffo cated, and had tho last storm, during which the Elmore put into Neah bay for safety, continued a little longer, the result to the passengers would have been dis:slrons, lo say the least The officers of tho Elmore say tliat the boat behaved splendidly and proved a first-class sea vessel. Two Other Acts of Crookedness Laid At His Door. Tho hearing of the case of embezzle ment against A, T. Brakkej was again continued last evening untd this after noon. The rancher whoso money tho accused secured is very anxious to re cover his coin as it represents his sav ings for upwards of a .year and was laid away for tho purpose of bringing his family to this city from Denmark. Friends of tho accused raised the money to makp good Brakko's defi ciency and yesterday jt looked as if the case would bo settled without further trouble, but new developments cropped up going to show that Brakke is in the habit of appropriating to his own use moneys entrusted to him for other persons. It was related yesterday that a saloon-keeper in TJppcrtown named Johnson was out $ and tho cost of a trip to PorQandand back, in ad dition to having a narrow escape from being tried for defrauding Uncle Sam. It appears that Johnson gave Brakke S2o to procure an internal xevenuo li cense foi liim, and went on doing bus iness. Ono .day a government in spector dropped in on Johnson and the latter had to go to Portland, and it was only after showing himself to have been innocent in the matter that he was let off on the payment of the amount of the license. It is also said that August Daniel son is out $20 through the accused. Ho gave Brakke 20 to pay Bobb & Parker a premium on an insurance policy. Brakke got the policy and the premium was charged up to Dan ielson, and itwas only on presentation of the bill that tho matter came to light The Y. M. C. A. Social. Everj- available seat was taken last night at tho T. M. 0. A. social at Y. M. C. A hall and standing room was at a premium. The exercises of the evening were ojened by a neat programme in which MissB. Hawthorne and Mr. Buter baugh gave interesting readings. Mr. Booth gave a solo and fine reci tation and Miss McKean rendered a beautiful solo. After these exercises the merry party orgrnized into numerous groups and indulged in numerous games until a late hour. Many strangers were present and the social was pronounced by all a de cided success. Cost Barbers in Towh ' At Joe Giardina's. Shaving 15c Nothing Succeeds like Saccess. THE C03DLITTEE IX CHARGE Tho opportunity afforded by teach ers' institutes for teachers to meet and discuss the methods employed by them in their educational work and to com pare results, is ono which will not be lost by members of tho profession who have a real interest in their work. Their value is universally recognized by successful educators everywhere, and the school law of this state wisely provides for teachers' county insti tutes, and makes it obligatory for the teachers to attend. However, the op portunity to meet for mutual lmprovo menVshould be such a pleasant duty that no compulsion should be neces sary to secure the attendance of all the teachers in the county. The pro gram usually consists of addresses, es says and exercises by teachers spe cially designated for the different sub jects to be considered, tho whole mak ing an entertainment that is interest ing and instructive, not only to the teachers, but to parents and patrons of tho school and all others interested in educational work. For the purpose of preparing a program for tho coming institute in this county and making it of tho most practical benefit, Superin tendent of Schools Sbively has ap pointed the following committee from the following named sohool districts: No. 1. Prof. L. M. Pratt, Mrs. Jen nie Bnsey, Miss Dora Badollet and Miss Alice McCormack. No. 18. Miss L. 0. Parker. Miss Mary Garner and Miss Jessie An derson. No. 9. Prof. A. L. Clark, Miss Helen Dickinson and Miss Emma Middle kauf. There is not very much time re maining between now and tho 5th of November in which to complete all the arrangements and give the teachers time to prepare the parts which Bhall be assigned to them, bnt it is believed that with the earnest cooperation of those interested a very pleasant and instructive session will be held. FOR POLITICAL PURPOSES. Why tho Croshy Mnrdcr Is Reins Talked of in Taroma. Chief of Police Barry was seen yes terday in reference to a dispatch from Tacoma announcing that it was be lieved there that the murderer of Crosby in that city was in jail at this point tinder the name of Hilda brand. Chief Barry emphatically de nied that such wasHho case and added with some vehemence that the story is all bosh and was sent out over the wires for political purposes. The idea is, the chief said, to defeat Price, the republican nominee for sheriff, by making it appear that he was instru mental in sending a couple of inno cent men to the penitentiary. The of ficer also stated that he had been to the Sound but his visit was in no wise connected with the Crosby murder. He knew of no man named Hilde brand under arrest here. REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS.
