A number of the school teachers of
this city who visited the Exposition at
Portland last week returned home on
the steamer Thompson yesterday,
much pleased with their trip and ben
efited by the vacation.
The cae ot A. T. Brakkc, charged
witb embezzlement, was again con
tinued in the justice court yesterday
until this evening. Mr. Brakko is
making strenuous efforts to settle the
case with the prosecuting witness.
The regular quarterly meeting of
the Astoria branch of the Woman's
auxiliary to the Board of Missions
will be held in Grace church Thurs
day, October 23, at 230 r. m. All"

Gustaf Wilson, the Russian vice
consul, came down from Portland
yesterday morning aud will return to
morrow. He has lately returned from
a trip to Ids far north aud native land,
from "which he has furnished interest
ing letters some of which have been
seen by readers of The Astoeiax.
The report of Chief Stockton, given
in another column, speaks well for the
management of the Astoria fire de
partment under his administration,
and is a good advertisement for the
city. There are few, if nny, cities the
eize of Astoria that can show so small
a percentage of loss by fire, with such
high rates of insurance.
The electric motor line is all right
and will be built," said O. E. Belding,
one of the head officers of the com
pany last evening prior to his depart
ure for Portland. Tho mission of the
gentleman to the city up the river is
to close some more contracts in regard
to building the line. A crew of men
are at work on tho top of Main
street hill making, n cut, and these
will be added to in a few days as it is
tho company's intention to have the
line in operation by April 1st next.
J. BL Miller of Dayton, Wash., is in
thecity adding to his list of fossils and
curios. He has in his collection a
unique carving in black slate, in the
form of a pipe on the stem of which
reclines the form of a man, with his
head resting against the bowl of the
pipe, and over his prostrate body
stands the imitation of some ferocious
beast which has seized the man's
hand, and seems about to devour it
The curio is said to have beenlound
in an Indian grave in Tillamook
county- Some peculiarities oE the
carving makes it seem probable that
it may be tho handiwork of some of
the early whito settlers, hunters or
trappers.
A wail of anguish has gone up from
the Chinese gamblers and opium
smokers, for it was announced yester
day that all the Chinese pawnbrokers
in the city would discontinue business.
Tho reason given was that the city
council had refused to reduce the li
cense exacted from tho pawnbrokers
$30 per quarter. The pagan money
loaners chum that they .cannot shave
down enough on their lellow-conntry-mca
to warrant the paying of the
license exacted, and in consequence
will go out of business This is. what
the Chincso say. The city officials,
however, do not believe it, and will
keep a sharp lookout on the doings of
Mongolian "uncles."

Stockton, of tho fire department,
for the year ended October 1st
shows that this city is either very
lucky or that the department is very
efficient During the year there were
only fifteen alarms. The total loss was
$6,100, not including the stock of
lxxts and shoes of Morgan Bros., in
the Mansell building, which was in
sured for 812,500. The insurance on
the losses exclusive of the Morgan
Bros, risk, was $3,500. Tho list of

A Slatnmoth Potato.
Talking about potatoes, Byron Kim
ball brought a potato of theLateRose
variety to Thb Astobxan office yester
day, the like of which has not been
seen in these or other parts. It is only
a sample of the wonderful fertility of
Clatsop county soil This mammoth
tuber, which is so remarkable for its
tuberosity, grew on Henderson & Kim
ball's ranch on Young's river, on the
upland, where the soil is about two
feet deep to the clay. The manner in
"which vegetables grow in this country
is simpjy riotous; uicy cton't seem to
know when to stop. Mr. Kimball says
he don't know what this potato would
have done if it had not been taken out
of the ground. A careful measure
ment showed it to bo Z& inohea in
circumference one way and 30 inches
the other.

SCAPED IN THE 7?IGHT;
Two Sailors Take French Leave of Their
Vessel.
Captain Banks, of the British bark
Kate F. Troop, which has been ly
ing at tho mouth of tho river ready to
go to sea for several days,- mourns the
loss oE two of his best sailors, and it i3
probable that ho will have to ship two
more men before starting on his voy
age to the United Kingdom. The
men missing deserted from the vessel
sometime during Tuesday night or
yesterday morning, and in making
their escape stole one of the ship's
boats. The names of the men are not
given, but the circumstances of their
desertion are as follews: During
Tuesday Captain Banks visited the
ship Troop and the bark Norfolk
Island, which were anchored near
by, and in returning to his ship the
boat as is customary, was not hoisted
on board, but was left floating
astern made fast by a line. Yester
day morning the boat was gone and
a muster of the crew showed two able
seamen miEsing. The disappearance
of the boat explained the absence of
the sailors and a search was made.
Tho boat was subsequently found
tied up to a pile at tho jetty, but no
trace of the men could be found.

let the deal be carried on by President
Reid, who has the matter in hand, was

Captain Flavel. who was elected
director to fill the vacancy caused by
Judge Page's resignation was not
present, being absent from the city,
and. it is not known whether ho will
accept or not as he has not notified
tho board either wav.

The steamship Oregon left yester
day for Victoria and Puget sound
ports.
Tho steamship Oregon crossed out
for San Francisco yesterday morning,
one day behind time.
The steam schooner Alliance was
tunong yesterday's arrivals. Sho left
up the river in the afternoon.
The steam schooner Augusta, sailed
for Tillamook yesterday afternoon,
carrying freight and passengers.
The steamship Miles arrived down
from Portland yesterday aud will
cross out for Shoalwatcr bay this
morning.
The British bark Norfolk Island,
which cleared from here for the United
Kingdom with a cargo of wheat sev
eral days ago, crossed out yesterday.
Among the cargo of the steamship
Oregon, sailing from here yesterday,
were 50 barrels of cranberries, 40,000
feet of lumber, 200 sacks of oysters
and 1,200 bundles of shooks.
The British ship Angerona arrived
down from the inland city yesterday
and will take on tho remainder of her
cargo here. Sho has on board 31,607
bags of flour, equal to 15.S03 bbls the
value of which is $39,261. Tho vessel
is consigned to Galway, Ireland.
Needs Explanation.
The Nob Hill nine, of Portland,
played at Astoria yesterday afternoon,
and won a game from the seaside
dwellers by a score of eleven to three.
The Astoria baseball enthusiasts
turned out in full force, and after the
game was over paid their bets and
sympathized with their home team.
The Astorians needed sympathy to fall
back on, for they were rather weak
when they got through, playing a hard
up-hill game against the Nob Hills.

Two Oil Steamboat Men Get Afoul
of Each Otter.
"GOOD OLD DATS" DISCUSSED.
There was a re-union of two old
steamboat men at the Occident .hotel
yesterday" afternoon, and as a conse
quence stories of steamboating in the
early days of a quarter of a century
ago were in order. The veterans were
Captain G. W. Estabrook and Dan
O'Neil, now purser of the steamer R'
R. Thompson. It was twenty-five
years ago that Captain Estabrook and
Mr. O'Neil were shipmates on the
river running between this city and
Portland, Captain Estabrook being
master and Mr. O'Neil purser of the
old steamer Coluin b ia. Tho former
has for years been living at Hwaco
and the latter for many years has been
running'in and out of this -port, but
strange to say they never met until
yesterday.
'Those were good old days, weren't
they Dan?" said the captain, dapping
O'Neil on the back. -
,4You bet they were," replied the
purser, smiling grimly, "S25 for a trip
to Portland, and then we didn't al
ways get there.
"Why," said Mr. O'Neil, turning to
Captaiu Gray, "I remember the pas
sengers used to come to me and com
plain that the boat was stuck, and I
could only tell that she was going
ahead by looking over the side to see
if there was any wash from the wheels.
Yes, those were great old days."
Captain Estabrook left for a visit to
Portland on Mr. O'Neil's boat last
night, and it is unnecessary to xay
that many anecdotes of those days
gone by were recounted on the trip.
Ilolladay Estate Decisions.
In the county court this morning
Judge Julius C. Morelanu decided the
matters involving Administrator Jas.
Steel's claim against Joseph Holladay
for S10.000, alleged to have been lost
iu his disposal of the Oregon Real Es
tate Company's stock, and also Holla
day's claim for salary as executor of
his dead brother's estate; claim for
clerk hire and attorneys' fees.
He disallowed Mr. Steel's claim of
SiO.OOO because an insufficient shoe
ing had been made that Holladay
willfully mismanaged tho stock iu
question. Ho also disallowed Holla
day's claim for salary as execntor and
an additional one for clerk hire on the
ground that tho claimant assumed the
trust with tho tacit uuderstanding
that ho would execute the duties at
tached thereto gratuitously.
In the instance of attorney fees tho
court allowed Messrs. Richard and E.
B. Williams 250 each, from October
11, 18S7, to May 31, 18S9, to which they
aro fully entitled, considering tho an
noyance they have submitted to. Or

Delay Is Defeat.
Salem, Oct. 21. In the circuit
court to-day, in the matter of W. H.
Biggs, relator, vs. J. P. Faull et al.,
a continuance was had for service.
This virtually knocks the case out of
court for before tho next term the
board will be out of existence, as tho
coming legislature will elect a new
ono if tho law is not changed. This is
the case iu which Biggs, of the gov
ernor's railroad commission sought to
oust the legislative board of commis
sioners out of office. A continuance
was had because tho service papers in
the suit have not had tho length of
time on all tho members ot tho legis
lative commission. Faull is the man
who has not been served. Orego

Work for the Next LesLslatare.
The committee on assessment and
taxation, appointed by the last senate,
is grinding away at the capitol build
ing upon a bill to be reported to tho
next session of tho legislature iu Jan
uary. Very little of a definite charac
ter has yet been done. It is more
than probable that the committee will
favor the repeal of the mortgage tax
law, and it is likely that the clause of
the bill of the last session upon this
point will bo taken as a basis of action.
This bill will, without doubt, be one of
the principal fights of the next ses

Locomotives for the Jerusalem & Joppa
Road.
Washington, Oct. 21. United
States Consul Gillman at Jerusalem,
reports to the department of state that
the three American locomotives,
made in Philadelphia, and intended
for tho new railway from Jerusalem
to Joppa, have arrived. The consul
says it must interest our citizens to
know that tho first locomotives ever
used in this ancient land were made
in the New "World.
