A model kindergarten and college

strange even for New York, attracted
attention even in the Tombs police
court this morning. Fifty-seven
women, all white, with the exception
of two Negroes, and one of Cbiuese
American p. rentage, wre escorted in
by twenty policemen.
Tho women were all found in Chi
nese opium dens last r.ight, and an
afternoon paper, which is ordinarily
pro-Chinese, described their appeal -ance
as follews:
Their intimate relations with the
Chinese seemed not only to cause
them to lose all their own self respect,
but also to take on in part the uaturo
of the celestials. The two colored
girls'tried to laugh in a shame fared
sort of way as the horde was marched
in beforo the bar. Souio others were
laughing and a very few were criiig.
Most of them looked defiant They
had brought with them out of the den
a distinct odor of c-pinm. One I bird
of tho entire lot wore bats, while Tonr
fifths showed the effects of opium
smoking. About one-third were Ant
to jail, and they ate opium pills while
waiting for tho van.

amount of naval construction is now
in the hands of ship building firms,
but it appears to be somewhat embar
rassing to the builders in the matter of
obtaining supplies of material, which
must bo of domestic production. The
number or steel works that can pro
duce largo castings necessary to carry
out certain designs is exceedingly
limited, and they are pressed with;
standing orders, so Uramp has sug
gested to the navy department that he
bo allowed to modify the designs for
the stem and stern posts of armored
crniser No. 2, which provide for mam
moth solid steel castings, in order to
open up a field to other methods of
construction and hasten work up on
the vessel.

J. C. Sullivan, who commanded a
division under Eosccrans, and who
fought at the battle of Inka, died iu
Oakland this afternoon. At the out
break of the war he went into the
army as colonel of the Thirteenth
Indiana regiment. He was breveted a
brigadier general after the battle of
Kernstown. He died of hemorrhage
and had been sick only a week. Ho
leaves a wifo and daughter. Ho was
a son-in-law of Major-General 31. F.

of Mrs. Burnett, widow or Governor
Peter Burnett

sobbing increased aud all efforts to
get her to withdraw the plea were
fruitless.

Queen of the Antilles from the mother
country," said a gentleman -from Ha

mercial crisis, which may spread into
a revolution, involving all classes be
fore it is quieted.

the prison walls at Stillwater on passes

journeyed to Southeastern Alaska.
It is said that shad may be taken
every month in tho year in Sacra
mento bay, and that they greatly
exceed Eastern specimens in size.

tho value of the work of the United
States fish commission than this suc
cessful introduction of a delicious
fish into waters' 3,000 miles distant
from their original environment."
Kiver Improvement at Vancouver.
Captain Cleveland Rockwell and
his crew of men aro in the city with
headquarters at the Esmond hotel,
ana are now engaged m making a
survey of tho river at this point with a
veiw to the removal of tho sand bars
which havo of late obstructed the en
trance to the magnificent harbor lying
in front of onr city. This work will
be done by government appropriation
as soon as the necessary survey has
been made and plans of work pre
pared and approved." Although the
tendency of the main channel is grad
ually changing to this side of the
river, a great volume of water still
keeps its conreo south of Shaw's
island. Tho lleg'mter has it from
good authority that if the Vancouver
people would move in the matter, the
government would consent to a revet
ment of piling being put in near the
ferry landing on the opposite side of
the river. This would send the cur
rent past the city front and soon
wash out the objectionable sand bars.
This is a subject of importance to the
commerce of our city and deserves the
attention of the chamber of commerce
as well as the city council. The
Union Pacific management have ex
pressed themselves in favor of this
mode of removing tho bars, and now
is the time to act. Vancouver Reg
ister. Sunday observance is steadily gain
ing ground in Paris. In the West end
the great majority of tho shops are
closed, and the railway companies
havo lately agreed not to reckon Sun
day in charging for the warehousing
of goods. The postofiices, too, are to
close in future at 6 p. jr. instead of 8,

this morning adopted a resolution as f
the sense of the body that no slight or
insult was intended on the part of the
house in the refusal of of the speaker
to accept the governor's message yes
terday evening and appointing a com
mittee to call upon the governor and
request- that the message again be
sent to the house.
Governor Campbell complied with
the request
The message recommends that tho
legislature pass a law providing for a
non-partisan board of improvement
for Cincinnati to bo appointed by the
mayor, and that an election bo held
in April.
He scores tho lobby, which ho says
has been here from Cincinnati in tho
interests of the present board of im
provement, and says their open dec
larations that they are controlling the
legislation ought to be a sufficient in
dication to tho members that the
board is in disrepute and should bo
abolished at once.

death last week of the actress, Katie
Hart, has entirely changed Jack Mc
Auliffe's plans. Her death has greatly
affected the champion and. his friends
havo advised him to take a trip to
Europe.
Philip Dwyor, the turfman, will sail
for Europe next month and he has
asked McAulifle to accompany him,
and the champion has accepted his in
vitation. His proposed match with Billy
Meyer, the Streator lad, is off in con
sequence. Tho match had nearly
been made, but the champion says ho
will not enter the ring again for some
time. It is McAuliffe's intention to remain
in England several months and during
that time if some London club, prefer
ably the Pelican, will put up a good
sized purse he may conclude to meet
Jem Carney, the English champion,
with whom he fought to a draw.
He will not consent to fight Carney
unless tho latter will wager at least
5,000 on the outside, on the outcome

Mrs. William Bacon, of Atlanta,
Ga., has a collection of souvenirs
brought from Mount Christus, at
Oberammergan, a little stone two
inches long and half as wide, which

profile of Christ. It is a death face,
the drooping mouth, the closed eyes
and the sorrowful brow with its deep

ing of the state board of trade this af
ternoon Land Agent Mill3 of the
Southern Pacific Company addressed
tho board giving a description of
the poor condition of affairs in North
Dakota, as related to him by a friend,
who lately traveled through here.
Two hundred thousand people havo
just discovered that the country is
unsuitable for tillage. He had also
been informed by Mr. Collier, of Ta
coma, that the northwestern states are
receiving from 400 to 500 people a day
trom uaKOta. it tjaluorma, on
wheels, would come through, that part
of tho country so that the inhabitants
lof North Dakota could see the mag-
mhcent products of California, it
would be beneficial.
Mills suggested sending two men,
familiar with tho resources of Califor
nia, to meet the cars on the border of
Dakota, to talk to tho visitors. The
suggestion was adopted.

British bark Rothiemay arrived here
yesterday, fifty-nine days from Shang
hai. When boarded by the health
officer, Captain J. Hayes, acknowl
edged he had no bill of health.
Pressed still further he said that one
of the crew was removed from the ves
sel to a hospital at Shanghai just be
fore tho vessel sailed. He had died of
cholera inside of eight hours. Two of
the men at present on board are suf
fering from ague. The bark has been
quarantined.
