Alaska Salmon Belarus.
San Fbanctsoo. Oct 17. For the
first time since returns o salmon have
been coming in from Alaska stations,
the pack has fallen behind the aggre
crate of last year. From the middle of
July until Tvithin the present week the
results of this season nave exceeded,
those of last year. The arrival of the
sehooners May Bower and Buelali,
the bark Nicholas Thayer and ship
Gatherer have brought about the
change. These four vessels brought
less than 60,000 cases. Up to date
the number of cases from Alaska is
443,645. During the same time last
year the pack received amounted to
468,814: cases. The decrease this year
is caused by returns coming m from
those stations in Alaska where packs
have been very poor.

FUtlifal to Her Soldier.
The figure of a -woman closely veiled
can be seen in McPherson square at
about twilight once every month, says
a Washington letter in thePiitsburg
Press.
She is a very handsome woman,
with a good figure, and from her ap
pearance seems to be well-to-do. 'She
will sit on one of the wooden benches
in the park for a few moments and
gaze intently at the magnificent statue
of the deceased Gen. ATcPherson,
which adorns the square.
The woman is Miss Emily Hoffman.
Twenty-six years ago she was one of
the richest belles of Baltimore, was
visiting out "West and happened to
meet Gen. McPherson. They fell in
love and were betrothed.
The general was engaged in fighting
the confederates at the time and
could not marry her then; beside, her
family were well-known Southern
sympathizers, which was another
cause for the postponement of the
wedding.
The war continued and the general
fell dead in battle with the portrait of
his sweetheart clasped close to his
breast.
Miss Hoffman never recovered from
the shock, and has ever since, with the
regularity of clockwork, visited the
statue of her hero once a month.
