This 13 good news. But mingled with tho joy it brings is one little ray of doubt, no bigger than Joe Van's new barn, as to its reliability. Not for the whole of the Bose addition would any reflection be cast upon Spencer's good intentions or veracity. But alas! That same Kose has an abnormally developed imagination and his intense longing to see "the main line of the Astoria & South Coast railroad run through the east half of the southeast quarter of section five" so read tho bonds may have caused .him to forget his early Christian training and the recent camp meeting, and fabricate for fun. Bnt what there is no doubt of at all, is that important movements are being made in more than one direc tion, presumably by the great South ern Pacific system. Nehalem Journal. All Watches Compasses. A few days ago I was standing by an American gentleman, when I ex pressed awish.to know which point was north. He nt once pulled out his watch, looked at it and pointed north. I asked him whether he had a com pass attached to his watch. "All watches," he replied, "are compasses." Then he explained to me how this was. Point the hour hand to the sun and" tho south is exactly half way between tho hour and the figures XII on the watch. For instance suppose that it is 1 o'clock. Point the hand indicat ing 1 to tho sun, and LT on the watch is exactly south. Suppose that it is 8 o'clock, point the hand indicating 8 to the siln, and the figure X on the watch is due south. My American friend was quite surprised that I did know this. Thinking that verypos sibilyl was ignorant of a thing that every one else knew, and happening to meet Mr. Stanley, I asked that eminent traveler whether he was aware of this simple mode ol discover ing the points of the compass. He said that he had never heard of it I presume, therefore, that the world is m the same state of ignorance. Amalfi is proud of having been the home of tho inventor of the compass.
