P?C Ci?-','",T4TV X en $m gaUg Historian ASTORIA. OEEGON: SATTOtDAY. ..OCTOBER ll. ISO liners worth heeding. When" a man has Ms business in perfect worldng order, and knows lliat, juet Uiou, a little more or a little le efibrt on Lis part Trill be an swered bj increased or decreased profits, it is bard for Mm to believe it wise for Mm to leave Ms duties for an bour, even though be is over worked. But one of tbe Mgbest duties a man owes bimself is to give Ms brain au occasional rest. Tbere is a good deal more in life tbau simply adding to one's bank account Tbere is more honor in being a good citizen tban in simply growing rich. It is poor policy to be tborougbly posted in all tbat concerns your business and bo out of all kuowledge of tbe great world. A man wauls to forget bis business oc casionally ougbt never to carry bis cares beyond Ms store door. A night's respite from business cares will send ou back to them with renewed strength and a clearer bead. lo not jmagino that your business will go to tbe dogs if you leave it for a day or two. If you have been tbor ongh with your men if you have faithful and interested employes the machine will jog along smootMy rnuagh until yon return. We are apt to flatter ourselves that we are doing what wo other person could do; but, not wfreqnontly, something happens to nitow us that we are not nearly as indispensable as we imagined in fact, that a division of labor in our busi-iu- would be vastly to its advantage. Our subordinates, if left in charge, oc casKMally will have a chance to carry oat zamc ideas of their own, and these i!i a majority of cases, are decided improvements. The man who re pnltscs suggestions from those under liiai -gives his men no credit for kuowitig any tiling beyond the steady routine of their employment loses much that would be of assistance to him, falls into a rut and stays there, much to his dclriment The man win cannot learn something from con tact with other men, whether em ploy? or outsiders, is not a healthy man. 1'osinre; is a master tbat boou makes abject slaves of us if wo will; but. with a well established trade, one s!oitld le master of his business. V11h jwobity, industry, and economy, alnuvsl any man, by well directed ef fort, m be prosperous. Whatever progress is made without this founda tns is deceptive. EviBRY citizen of Astoria should take pride in the Chamber of Commerce, and every business or professional man w!h cares to advanco tho interests of tlie city should be a member of that Iwly. Wiien public men like John TweedaJe. chief clerk of the war department, and Senator Washburn come here they are entertained by tho Gliamber of Commerce and tbe few roeralters of that body foot the billsi while the ciiy gels the credit of en tertaining them. Therefore every maa vho cares for tho welfare of As toria should be a member of that IkxIv. The naval commission como here next week and should bo enter tained. The Chamber will do jt but you men who are not members should help foot tho bills, if you do not join. Which will yon do? It is a plain question of duty, which every man will consider ad dressed to him personally, and should answer as his conscience dictates. Join the organization and help tho live men in it sustain the honor and hospi tality of the city, or put your bauds in your pockets and pull out the coin to help them do the entertaining, for which yon receive as much credit as they. Stroxg efforts are being made by the Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce to secure in that city the location of some of the big Welsh tin companies. Tho Mclvinlcy bill, now in opera tion as a law, shuts out tho Welsh product, and it is believed that they will pack up their plants and bring them over and set up in business. That might be the center of tho tin plate industry and has all the advan tages and resources to make it so, if the people will only make tho proper effort to advertise the fact lllL-'HI,ii Alvau Clark is now constructing a telescope for a Los Angeles observa tory that will bring the moon within an apparent distance of 100 miles from the observer. i:onx.
