THt KSDAY.
..OCTOBKB 9. 1890
Arrmt eluding the officers of several
counties in Alabama, nftny or whom
have some of his lead in their bodies,
Rube Burrows, the notorious outlaw
and train robber has been killed- The
dispatch sas the outlaw's death has
caused much excitement Instead of
excitement, great rejoicing should bo
indulged in, for Burrows was superior
to Jessie James, in that he was more
blood thirsty.
EDnroniAii comment on the railroad
situation as correctly and comprehen
shely expressed in the long article on
the first page is comparatively un
necessary. The account is so fully
and clearly given that every reader
can form his opinion as to the pros
pect of a successful result All the
directors are unanimous in their ex
pressions of satisfaction, and knowing
all the facts in the case, The Asto
kiax feels justified in saying that the
situation of affairs is exceedingly
bopeful.
Gould and Huntington, the rail
road magnates, express opinions that
the Canadian Pacific railway is cut
ting into the business of America's
transcontinental lines to a consid
erable extent and Mr. Huntington
thinks that the trade of Portland with
the Orient will bo badly handi
capped. It may be that the
Southern Pacific president is right,
but with a railroad connecting Astoria
with cither the Union or Central Pa
cific transcontinental systems, and a
line of transpacific steamers direct"
ironi this port, Oregon would have
nothing to fear in regard to the trade
with China, and it is dollars to apples
that a large portion of the trade that
now goes to San Francisco would
come to this citv.
