She gaili fotm FIRST ANNIVERSARY BALL TO BE GIVEN BY THE ASTORIA AMATEUR DRUM CORPS AT LIBERTY HALL TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14th The Tubllc, whom we faitltfnlly strive to pi aso, are respectfully invited to attend. The Best Music in the city has been secured and a pleasant oculng is anticipated. .cs-Tlcltct admitting Ladles and Gen tleman, Sl.OO. May bo obtained from any Member of the Corps, or at tho Book Stores and other business places, Having been duly recorded, is now on the "market. It -will be ivorlh a visit from every one who can possibly attend. Head it, too, and then see if you do not think that Oregon should bo represented at that grand gathering of the people of all nations. It would be an everlast ing disgrace not to be. 44 What a pity this city has no rail road,' said Joseph Grismer last evon ing to a representative of Tun Astob iak. "Every time I come hero this is more forcibly impressed on my mind and I always think that before I come NO BETTER INVESTMENT IN THE COUNTY - LOTS SOLD QU THE INSTALLMENT PLAN 5I THE PACIFIC S.Ei ESTATE OQT&pgJS General Agents, zsca rwinnirHnwm CIIKIS. EVKNSON. F. COOK RUCKERS THE staurant. FBED SAIZ ?3. addles and Harness je o :el Re again, work will be commenced on a railroad.' lie was assured that the people here were becoming impressed with Uie importance of securing a road and expressed his earnest wish that we might be successful. GoxxEcnox with the Southern Ta cifie would be of greater value to As toria than with the Union or North ern, for the simple reason that the former road, with its fhreo lines run ning through the great valley of the "Willamette, would bring hero for ex port by water the immense grain pro duct of that rich, and fertile section. The heavy grain shipment from there and the coal from Nehalcm would be important items in the business of a railroad to this citv. Railroad schemes are numerous, and none of them ever materialize, so that people are really getting tired of having their hopes aroused so often, only to bo soon after doomed to dis appointment. This morning, how ever, the extract from the Oregonian which is published in the local columns, taken in connection with an article published Aug. lGth and now re produced, certainly appears as feasible as anything in tho way of railroad pro jects that we have had for a long time. It very reasonably accounts for the si lence of Huntington and corresponds with a personal letter received some six weeks ago by tho writer from one of the vice-presidents of the Southern Pacific, who, in reply to a question, said: "You will hear from Mr. Hunt ington in due lime." "Wriiii Oregon send an exhibit to the "World's fair, is an important ques tion. The WcslSJioie forcibly illus trates the conundrum. In a sketch, California, "Washington, Utah and other Pacific coast states are shown as sending long and heavily laden trains bearing the products of the several states to the great exposition, while Oregon, oar state, is sending an exhibit con sisting of a bale of moss, hay seed, a turnip or two and some catnip, carried Ghincso fashion on a shoulder pole by two grangers. Get in, gentlemen of the several boards of trade and cham bers of commerce, and send an exhibit to Cliicngo that will fill several trains and show tho world what Oregon can do. There is no time to bo lost. Activo measures should bo taken at once. If tho Port land board or trade don't move, lot Astoria's chamber of commerco get in and set tho ball rolling; tho products of this county it properly presented will make a fine showing.
