Taking advantage of the fact that the bustle is likely to make its appear ance again, after a protracted retire ment, a correspondent of the Chicago Post reviows the pedigree of tbafc ar ticlo of dress- It is literally as old as the hills, and, although caricatur ists hero ridiculed it, theologians thundered at it, aud law makers as sailed it with statutory enactment, yet it still lives, and will so long as wo men exist on the face of tho planet. In tho days of Pericles and Aspasia the Athenian women built out their hips by some sort of a bustle, and this fashion must have been kept alive during the dark ages, for with the renaissance came tlie vertugado from Spain a sort of pad which served to puff out the skirt. In a very short time this primilive bustle was supplanted by the far thingale, or hooped petticoat. Thefalant King Henry of Navarre issued an edict against tho farthin gale. In 1719 an eminent French woman wa3 cited to appear in court and answer for her contempt. Sho did so, apparently, wearing tho offen sive bustle, and glorying in her own audacity. But fancy tho feeling oE the judges -when informed by the accused that her hips and circum ambient roundity were all her own. They took her word for it and dis charged tho fair prisoner. In 1718 it was bigger than ever and took the name of panieror basket. This was tho grandmother of our wooden crin oline. In order to accommodate tho queen Cardinal Floury ordered that a seat should alwayB be left vacant each side of her. Before the event of tho panier, actresses had been accustomed tD wear a short skirt, reaching only to the knee, made of coarse stiffened linen, but tho crackling noiso was so great that they had been abandoned. But tho bustle is coming back again next season. It will be a modest, re tiring little bustle, and it will not offend tho most fastidious. The Inventor of the Grain Eletater. Eobert Dunbar, whose death in Buffalo, New York, on the 18th in Btant, has attracted but little atten tion, is entitled to be held in kindly rememberanco by the grain growers of this country; and. for that matter, of the whole world. Mr. Dunbar, who was 78 years old at the time of his death, was an expert mechanical engineer and was the inventor of the grain elevator, and his invention has not only como into general nse at all the principal grain centers of this country, but has been introduced in England, Bussia and Canada. The farmer has shared the benefits of the consequent reduced cost of handling tho grain crop, which has amounted to many millions of dollars; a saying which will continue for all time.
