OKEGOK: FRIDAY OCTOBER 3. 1890 Iuaho lias gone Republican by a majority of about 6,500 The state logfektnre will be about 33 Ecpub lioMB to 19 Democrats. "With sucli coumJete control it bdhoovee the dom inant party to act judiciously and hon estly, for they vrill bavc no one else to blame for any orrors or misdeeds. H.vrLno.VD5 we must have or suc cumb to the inevitable, and retain our place amid the alow coach canal boat towns which linger along and ckc out a miserable existence covered with the mould, moss and decay of a musty, sleepy, antediluvian period. Do you like the picture? Do you want to be thus enshrined among the m drives of ancient lore? If not, then lot Astoria arouse and any "Where God and nature has done so much for us, we will do something for our selves.'' Positive action has been taken by the directors of tho New York Cen tral railroad against the Knights of Labor. Yice-Prcsident "Webb has ad dressed a circular to the various heads of dopartments of the road requesting them to inform their men that they cannot remain members of the Knights or Labor and be in the em ploy of the road. The reason given is that the recent action of that order has !cen such tbnfc the ofilcials of the road do not believe a member of the Knights can be of efficient service to Ibe company, and all men who desire to remain iu the order will not be kept iu the employ of the road. Whatevki: ma have been his feel iuj. Speaker Heed did a very uu gonUomanly act yesterday iu the rotunda of the national capitol. He was walking with Congressman TJou ielle and met President Ilarrisou, and though the latter saluted and spoke plcasautly, Heed paid no attention, but looked ahead and walked right on. This pnblic snub of the president in such a place, is particularly insulting, and is a very reprehensible act on the part of Speaker Heed. He will make no friends by such an act, and the Democratic papers will take pleasure in quoting it as another point against the man thov po much dislike. liArinnY onward toward a glorious success many a city is marching stondtly along, because of the live men within her borders who act in unison on every movement for the general good. Here in Astoria where xnauy arc inclined to sit quietly dozing, because they believe that the indus trious people of the world will of necessity come here without nriugr, as we have so mauy natural advantage?, the proces sion marching "toward a glorious success" is moving slower than if keeping time to a funeral march. Evon with all our natural advantages, without putting forward earnest effort, the dominion of Satan will freeze hard enough for a skating pond before Astoria will become a big city. Work and energy alone brings success, cither to an individual or to a cilv. THK FATTEST CIUL Y7T. A 40-rocnil Girl. 10 Years Old, in West moreland Connt. Pa. The largest and heaviest girl of her ago that ever lived has been un earthed at the little village of Coke vil'e. Westmoreland county, near the Indiana county line, about a quarter of a mile from Ulairsville Intersection and Ulairsville. Her name is Delia Ueck, her age is 1G years and she weiglis 450 pounds. The girl is tho daughter of a re spectable coal miner, and is one of eight children. Her parents are both of ordinary size, aud none of her brothers and sisters show signs of ex ceeding average limits in points of physical development. One sister reached the weight of Mo pounds at at the age of 5 j cars, but died at that period. A Times reporter visited the Beck homestead and found Delia to bo a sufficiently comely American girl, strong and healthy, and evincing fair intelligence. When sho was 5 years ld she said she weighed 140 pounds, and she has been gaining steadily ever since For some years past the in crease in her weight has been at the rate of one pound a mouth. While the reporter was present a dressmaker came in and measured Delia for a dress. Some of the meas urements were as follows: 01 inches aronnd the waist, St inches around the bust, 12 inches around the neck and 31 inches around the ileshy part of the arm. Her height is about 5 feet 4 inches. Her feet are not long, but arc abnormally broad, so that it is impossible to procure any ordinary pair of women's shoes to fit her. The same difficulty is experienced in fit ting Lit with hose. Her mother ex plained that to meet the einbarrass niout "which this causes sho buys two pair of hose for Delia and makes lliem into one. Delia's chair is a curious piece of furniture, specially made for her, and a sottee intended for two people. Her bed is furnished with extra supports. Delia- was asked if she experienced any difficulty in walking. "No," she said, "bnt iu going npstairs I puff a litUe.' Considering her enormous size she is wonderfully light and ac tive on her feet Compared with famous fat women of history, Delia Beck outshines, or intbsr outweighs them all, when her sc is taken into account Hannah Battcrsby. the fattest woman that over Jived, did not acquire her phe nomenal proportions until she was 40 ycais old, and Big Winnie, the colored heavy weight, was 30 beforo she made a record for hersell. Pittsburg Times. An Immense Blast. Hast Saturday afternoon at Port Angelcp here was a huge blast of rock to clear a space for buildings which is described in a dispatch to the Tacoma Globe ns follows: ''The we.ht of powder used was 22,000 jjouudfe, and it T?as disposed in six chambers along a transverse level Bcwary-six feet from the face of the SI bluff which projects out at the west ern side of tho harbor. It was cal culated to displace about 65,000 tons of rock, or 32,000 cubic yards. The wires formed a circuit of 40,000 feet and the shot was touched off by means of a dynamo electric machine. The whole population and many visitors retired to a safe distance and all doors and windows were left open. The baiter was touched off by Miss Ade line J. Behler of Seattle. The dis placement of the rock is something over 20,000 cubic yards, but no correct estimate can yet be ascertained, ns tho rock is cracked all around within 150 feet and still falling. The blast made an opening of about 125 feet by 75 reec ueep, anu was a complete success in every particular. The concussion was very slight and no damage to surrounding buildings or other prop erty was uone. ssot even a pane of glass was broken." Out of season. The story that a Yankee has invented a chicken hob bler, consisting of a spring attached to a hen's leg, which, when tho hen attempts to scratch, will move her on ward, and will, iu fact, walk her right out of the garden.
