About 15,000 cases have already been reported, and nearly 10,000 have proved fatal The health officer of this port should be careful and thorough in his examination ofi all ships arriving hero from that infected land. There is a committee of the Cham ber of Commerce composed of some of our well known citizens, and it is evi dent that the gentlemen have mys teriously disappeared, as they have not been heard from for two weeks or more. The lost gentlemen were ap pointed a committeo to see what could be done towards raising 125,000 and securing ihe location of the "Wil lamette university. If any person finds the committee please send them homo and receive the thanks of a dis tressed community, who mourn their mysterious loss. Astoria would bo wonderfully ben efitted it she had a fast steamer of her own, plying between hero and Portland, and could easily raiso the money to build and equip one. The trouble would be, however, lint as noon as she commenced running the Union Pacific would continually lower fares and freights, and for the sake of economy most people would patronize the cheaper line. The U. P. could stand it for months to run at a loss, but it might be very unsatisfac tory to the owners of the opposition boat to continue running at a loss, week after week, and mouth after month. "With the largo amount of river travel now. it is indeed shame ful that the TJ. P. will not put on moro boats or ran oftener. Every nitwit when the steamer goes up, scores of persons can get neither room nor berth, aud such a lack of accommodations 'certainly is not proper treatment when passengers axe so numerous and boats arc run ning at a great profit m'jmmmwm m nwimiu NEW TO-DAY.
