OREGON: MONDAY -SEPTEMBER 29, 1890 "With commendable promptness, liboral-licarted mon in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York are re sponding to the telegram flaslied all over the country o the destitution of Mrs. Jessie Benton Fremont and daughter. A fund lias been started and is being rapidly increased to se cure the estimable lady from the pinch of poverty. At the same time the effort to secure for her a pension from Congress is still being steadily pushed. She is a noble woman, the daughter of an honored sire, and the widow of a man who has done much for his country and left an unsullied record, as a legacy of inestimable value to his children. Axothxk, and the latest railroad proposition is to raise a subsidy c S3QD,030 cash, and a land subsidy oE one-fifth ot all the unimproved laud in this city and vicinity. In consid eration ot this munificent donation, a New York syndicate will agree to build a railroad from here to a con nection with a transcontinental line. This may strike some of our people so heavily as to almost take away their breath, bnt startling as the proposi tion may seem, it is doubtful if a rail rund will ever be constructed here until some such offer is ma le, though it appears as if the cash part of the subsidy is entirely too large. The land question, however, is about right, j Accidents wliich cause the breaking ot the telegraph wire are bad enough, bnt when steamers of the Union Pacific company deliberately tie up to the telegraph poles along the bunk and j thus pnll them over and break the J wire, it is time the "Western Union Telegraph company was after them with a verv sharp stick. This is alleged to be the cause of several breaks within the last three or fonr days and it is high time the law in relation to the protection of telegraph poles was enforced. Yes terday the bad breaks were repaired, but early in the evening the Hue went down ngaiu. This is getting to be terribly monotonous and exceedingly aggravating, and such deliberate acts by steamboat men which approach very near to malicious mischief, should be stopped by law inimc dialelv. SOMEWHAT GHOSTLY. A Peculiar Story Connected "With a rish Injr. Boat. B. F. Stevens, an old-time navi gator of the waters hereabouts, re lates a curious circumstance which, coming as it does from a neighbor whoso veracity is worthy of respect, persuades one that there must bo something in that supernatural the ory, commonly held as mythical, and referred to as visitations from the spirit world to mortal mankind. Stevens said: The incident lranspiro3 several years ago back in the seventies. I was then running a steamer for Kin ney's cannery. Fishing boat No. 90 of that firm's fleet was the subject of a peculiar experience. An Italian fish erman was running this boat, and one day the craft came homo without its master; he had been drowned. From that timo on that boat endured a pe culiar fate. No man could be induced, for love nor money, to take tho second trip in it Men who camo from San Francisco and other "remote sectionp, and from whom the history ot the ill fated craft was studiously withheld, would take boat No. 90 and make one trip, bnt never more than one. Time after lime she was manned and remanned, and as often was sho broxight back and peremptorily re jected. They all told the same story, to the effect that as the boat nearcd a certain point the distressing cries of a man could be heard lingering about them, and though nothing could be seen, tho sounds produced were un mistakable and terrifying. "Whatever may have been tho Into solution of the mysterious visitation to the fishermen, they must have had cause for their belief iu what they had witnessed, and the fact was undeni able that boat No. 90 had a profitless run that season.' Gxwc In the Dismal Snarop. More rattlesnakes have made their appearance in Norfolk county, on the edge ot tho Dismal swamp, than for years, and many of the reptiles have been killed. All sorts of wild animals are plenty in the great Dismal this year, and gunners can now enjoy fine sport in bringing in such big game as black bear and deer. Tho abundant com crop attracts tho bears, and the farmers are providing against tho ravages by trapping the "varmints.' Jiidtmond VispaUJi.
