tV-JW3rw K jfcjf & ill a mm wmmm t gnftt JlstMfatt, ASTORIA. OBEGON: THUESDAY.. SEPTEMBER 25, 1E90 Nothtn'o more can truthfully be said than is expressed in the local col umns in reference to the floating of the bonds of the Astoria and South Coast railroad. Much more might be said, but it is needless. Indications are exceedingly favorable, and the re sult "will be known very soon. Yesterday, the jury returned a ver dict of guilty against Oscar De La Garde, who was charged with man slaughter. He will be sentenced on Saturday. The penalty is from one to fifteen years in state prison, to be decided by the judge according to the circumstances of the case, as shown in the evidence submitted during the trial. The man was killed as the re sult of a dispute over two dollars won at a game of cards last July. Last evening at 8 o'clock the grand jury finished their work, reported to the court, and were discharged. Their report is given in full in the local col umns, and is excellent Their recom mendations are practical and appro priate. Justice Cleveland may well feel elated at their complimentary al lusion to him. Their criticisms in re gard to the arrest of Chinese gam blers and not of white men who vio ltte state laws aro just to the point, and should be heeded. The county officers are favorably mentioned. The entire report is a good document, and reflects creditably upon the gentlemen comprising the grand jury. TJxdeb the heading of Marino News and Notes in the local columns is an account of the cargo of the British ship Slievc Donard which yesterday cleared at tho custom house. Such a large cargo of flour, over 3,048 tons valued at 115,816, going out on one Tossel, deserves more than a passing notice. It teaches a lesson to the peo ple of Astoria, and that is, that it is a disgrace to us for not having a rail road liere so that such ships can dis charge their incoming cargoes and take on their loads for foreign ship ment When the time does come that a railroad here meete these large ves sels at our docks, there will bo no lack of business and prosperity for Astoria. Thb discussion of the water works question in The Dalles must be getting rather warm, judging from thefollow iag editorial remarks in the Times Mountaineer ot the 2dth inst: "We liave heard that some of the offscour ings of this city "the foetid emanations of public sewers have talked of a necktie party regarding the editor of the Times-Mountaineer. To them we will calmly say that this paper, on the water question, is anchored to its principles, and they will meet a hearty welcome when they attempt any in timidation. Wo are naturally con structed to oppose such elements, and Will give them a cordial reception when they attempt to inaugurate a "policy of violence" ADTICE TO MOTHERS. .Ofss.
