Astoria, - - Obeqon.
Having been duly recorded, is now on .the market It is one
of the finest suburbs to Astoria, situated, as it is, at the head
of navigation on the Lewis and Clarke river, seven miles from
Astoria and backed by about fifty settlers. It is the finest, and
most fertile valley in Clatsop County. Besides it contains
X
several logging camps, etc.

Ossgok Crxr papers are agitating
the matter of having the corporate
limits of the city extended so as to in
clude the Canemah and Green Point
additions. They claim that the
ealth of the city would be increased
and the rate of taxation lowered.
Tex thousand eight-page folders
ooataining a write-up of Eugene City
are now being distributed by the en
terprising Board of Trade of that city.
The Board of Trade of this city is
doing something in this line, but
would it not be better to do still
more? There should be a supply of
literature descriptive of Astoria and
Clatsop county's great advantages
kept on hand, and every one who
leaves the city for those points from
whence comes immigration, should bo
given a supply to distribute where it
will do the most good.
Nothing better could be desired for
the welfare of Astoria than the news
oir the local page contained in the
brief dispatch is true. Immediate re
sumption of work on the railroad and
its completion to a connection with
through lines, means a brighter day
for this city and marks tho commence
ment of a successful era far beyond
any which Astoria has over seen. It
insures growth, prosperity, an increase
of business, and the opening up of
this port to the proud position to
which by nature it is intended, but
which it never can reach without
tho construction of a through rail
road. AS USUAL.
"irioi Don't Seal tie 'ColuiMan'
Yon Don't Gel tie Hews, "
JL VERY FEW COMTAJtlSOXS.
Yesterday morning the callow youth
who tries to edit the Columbian
thought he made a brilliant point
in his squib headed "As Usual,"
where he tried to make a mountain
out of a molehill. Just to please the
child, let usr" suppose he scored a
point.
Now for the other side of tho case.
In the same issue of that paper on
the fourth page was an article in ref
erence to the Belgians trying to civil
ise Africa, which was printed in The
Astoeiax of the 20th, just three days
before.
In tho same column was an item
concerning the old whistling buoy on"
the Main street dock. That was pub
lished in The Astobtan of the 21st, or
two days before. That same day we
gave nearly a full column of the
cruise of the Manzanita, which was
not seen in the columns of the Colum
bian. Yesterday's issue of the Second
street organ failed to have a word
about the sale of 4,000 acres of timber
land in this county, for which $11,000
was paid to 25 residents of this city,
yet it was given in full :i these col
umns. This paper, also, had yesterday
morning, full particulars of tho rail
road move towards Frankfort, of
which the boy seemed to be oblivious.
"We gave a full account of the now
church at Knappa, of which the youth
had but a few hues.
His geographical knowledge is very
limited or ma brain (what J'ttle there
is of it) must be turned, for in yester
day's paper, in the second column on
the fourth page, he speaks of hay on
Second street as extending "east and
west from the sidewalk to the street
car line, and north and south from
Thompson & Boss1 to Thatcher &
Howell's." Buy a compass, young man.
'Almost every day The AstobiAn
has important local news which is
not found in tho Second street jour
nal, but we never refer to it, for it
Bounds childish, yet if the callow
youth has a single item which is not
found in this paper, he brags
about it like a little child over the
possession of one toy more than his
fellows.
"What is published in The Astoman
is all the reliable news and the people
know it, but they look with suspioion
on the windy articles in the Prevari
cator. If the publisher of the Culum
iaator tried as hard to tell the truth
sad five the news of the day -as he
tJoee'ionnd something to growl at in
The Astorian, he would show more
aeose and publish a better paper.
Some people, however, will live and
learn, and die fools at last
"If you do read the Columbian,
you don't get the news."
