Shttbgelding on llic great lakes of
the north is an active industry, and
tho city of Cleveland, Ohio, claims to
load tho iray. Sinco January first
the vessels built thore number 78
steamers with a pross tonnage of G3,
922, and IS barges and sailing ships of
15.313 tons. Last jear the vessel
built on the great lakes measured
107,OS0 tons.
Jay Gould, in a recent interview,
said: "I believe in imposing a tariff
which shall protect our industries, but
still not be prohibitory. In the case
of an infant industry it should be fos
tered until it is able to stand on its
own merits and then at least a portion
of the protection should be with
drawn. Jay is reported to be quite a
successful business man.
CosrMrxDUjnn cnergj is being
shown by Pilot Commissioners
Montgomery and Weeks, who aro
delormiued to have another pilot
schooner in service as soon as pos
sible, and have her cruising outside
with enough experienced pilots to
meet and safely bring into the har
bor the numerous foreign vessels now
coming here for wheat.
WriENTiVKi: the determined men f
Ai-ioria arouse to the proper concep
tion or the worl: and determine to ac
complish it, the construction of a nut
road to this city will be an assured
fact Several schemes are now in
progress tending to secure a railroad,
and though it is earnestly hoped they
may be successful, yet it is hardly to
be expected. It must be a gigantic
effort and united action of compara"
tively all our people before the whistle
of the iron horse attached to a through
train will be heard in this city. Prom
the completion of a railroad here our
growth and progress would be so
rapid that some of the antedeluvian
fossils would be frightened nearly out
of their senses. Tho railroad must
come.
Astoria has been long enougb in
the dumps on tho back seat, waiting
for something to turn up. Let this
continue no longer. Arouse from
your lethargy, gentlemen, and keep
up with the spirit of the times. More
manufacturing establishments must
be had, there should be a strong effort
made to establish steamer trade be
tween neighboring points up .and
down the coast, with this city as the
base of supplies, and there should be
a general activity manifested all
along the line. Build the electric
cable road, arrange for a city water
snpply, and let improvement and
progress be the order of the day. This
should no longer be a sleepy country
town, but should become a city in
reality, and n live, energetic, rapidly
growing city.
Yestekday's Oregonian is a re
markably creditable production. It
contains twenty pages and is a special
manufacturing edition, devoted prin
cipally to a carefully prcjarcd and
statistical acconut of the principal
manufacturing establishments of Ore
gon and Washington. It is profusely
illustrated, and is full of valuable in
formation, such a paper as should bo
sent by hundreds of thousands all
over the United States, especially in
the Atlantic states. It was received
too late last evening for a careful re
view and will be referred to again.
Astoria is favorably mentioned and
several of her industries are illus
trated. The production is one which
reflects great credit on the publishers
of the Oivgo7liaii, for it must have
been attended with immense expense
and a largo amount of hard work.
Seldom has there been a better
opportunity for Astoria to secure an
important business, than the one re
ferred to in the local columns under
tho heading of "Considerable IIonc."
To securo the location of such a mill
hero in the city as those parties
would evidently build would be of
great value. Though situated in the
midst of an immense timber country,
there aro but three saw mills in this
city, and these are crowded to their
utmost capacity to keep up with their
orders. Complete works to include
the manufacture of sash,, doors and
blinds are greatly needed here. Now
is the chance to secure them, and
s determined effort should be made to
do it Act with the promptness which
was shown when the subsidy of 200,-
000 was raised for C. P. Huntington
to secure the Southern Pacific.
