"What God Hatl Jolnei Toietler Let No Han Put Astute." A. SEJiMOX JIY JtHJ'. G. C. 1IAJ.T1. Last evening a good audience, as sembled in the "Congregational church were exceedingly interested in listen ing to an -able sermon on- the abovo topic by Eev. G. 0. Hall. The historical development of mar-; riage and tho laws of marriage and' divorce were clearly shown, and interest ing instances quoted which stand prom inently forth on the pages of ancient history, especially illustrative of lifo under" the Mosaic dispensation iind amid the brilliancy of Borne in its days of profligate splendor. The law ot divorce as given by Moses and mentioned by Christ in the gospel of St Mark, and in the same chapter the new commandment or di rection which Jesus gave, was read, and particular stress laid upon the words' in the eighth and ninth verses: "And they twain shall be .one flesh: so then they afe no more twain but one flesh. "What therefore-Godhath Joined together let uq man put asunder." The marriage laws of any people, touching life in its most vital point, as they do, may always bo taken as the best index of their moral develop ment. In the time of Moses fathers could and did sell their daughters, and if a man married and his wife dis pleased him he could awrite her a bill of divorcement and send her out of hii house." Abraham, Jacob and other patri archs had numerous wives, thus prac ticing polygamy, which was considered all right in those days, but now we regard it as a crime. The story of Hagar tho Egyptian wifo ot Abra ham, was given, and N. P. "Wills' beau tiful account of her being sent away, was quoted. Make woman a slave, steal from her rosy cheek by needless jealousies; lot the last star leave her a watcher by your couch of pain; wrong her by pet ulance, suspicion, all that makes her cup n bitterness, yet givo one evi dence of love, and earth has not an emblem of devotedness like hers. O, woman, loving woman, freighted in the race of lifo by tho Tioavy burden ot maternity, how cruelly thou liast been wronged in all ages and in all nations. In beautiful nnd thrilling languago the story of Livid, tho wife of Tiberius Nero was told, and how she was forci bly divorced from him by tho decree of Caesar Augustus that she might be come the wifo of the haughty om peror. Ho also divorced his own wifo tfcriboma, and married Livia, but forced Tiberius to give away tho bride and to presido at tho grand ban quet following tho wedding, which was given in till tho pomp and splen dor characteristic of the emperor's court, and followed by bacchanalian orgies. - The incident was related which re cently transpired heroin court, where a man obtained a divorco from his wifo on the ground of desertion, yet he had come out hero and made a home, and his wifo declined to leave friends and relatives and come here to reside. In the year 1889 tho divorces in tho United States reached the enormous and appalling figuro of 85,000. The true cause of divorce is not stated, for generally it is caused by incompatibilr ity and uncongeniality of disposition, and a vory low moral estimate of tho sacrcdness of tho marriage bond. Tho family is tho unit of society. Upon the integrity of tho marriage bond depends tho lifo and existence of tho family. Upon the family rela tion depends tho purity of society. Without tho family tho existence of the state is an impossibility. "When the family relation becomes defunct then our civilization will die. Chris tianity, society, national existence, and civilization itself is dependent upon tho integrity of the marriago bond for perpetuity "With what painstaking caro and conscientiousness then ought tho young to bo trained for parental duties, the highest and most- vital function of our race. Sow ought tho saored duty of true and honorable marriage to be inculcated into tho minds of tho young, at home, in tho school and by tho press and pulpit. Once wedded, wedded for lifo, should be impressed upon the young. The principles upon which marriago is based, the duty to enter wedlock, tho importance of marriage, tho'laws governing it, tho grounds of divorce, the nature of wedlock, preparation for it and how to live worthily and hap pily in it, will, then, be tho subject of discourse next Sunday evening, for tho subject is too broad and farreach ing to bo fully given in a single sermon. JUVENILE SWINDLERS. Messenger Boys Arrested for Deliy erin Fated DIsptclies. THEUl MODE OP I'JIOCEliUJiE. Special By The Uxitkd Pkess. Sax Fbancisco, Sept., 21. Arthur Marshall, Isaac Annexler and George Heitler, three "Western Union tele graph boys, were arrested to-day, charged with obtaining money under false pretenses. For some time past they have been delivering faked mes sages, which they would deliver to business men and the leading hotels, and on which they would collect sums ranging from 25 cents to $25. They would collect the money before they would give up the message. Their best business was done on a Chinese mer chant, from whom they obtained S25 on a faked cablegram. The Chinese paid the money, and were driven al most crazy when they secured the services of an interpreter and found that the cablegram was as follews: "The Chinese must? go.
