ai k gatftj Mww. ASTORIA. OKEGON : MONDAY -SEPTEMBER '.J2. 1830 A REVOLUTIONARY HOTBED. It is carious what a hotbed of revo lutionary ideas New York is becom ing, says the Philadelphia Record. The Rev. Hush 0. Pentecost, for example, runs an agnostic church and publishes a radical publication called the Twentieth Century. The former has a congregation of 1,000 larger thau that of nine-tenths of the churches in the island. The latter has a circulation of 5,000 at least Its popularity is shown by the fact that it is difficult to obtain a copy at any news-stand three days after its publi cation. The Bellamyites or Common wealth crowd are chieilly peo ple of leisure, who go in for novel hobbies and who a few years ago were "Scientific State Socialists," under the leadership of the late Courtlandt Palmer and ThaddeusP. "Wakemau. It is not surprising, therefore, to find Wakemau, who is a prince of cranks, among the chief officers of the new organization. Mora important and influential than these two elements are the single-tax men, who have adopted ''Progress and Poverty" as thei r bible. They have clnb-rooms u hero they give lecture', ho!d debate., di-sseminale their own literature, and make, or try to make, converts every day and night the year through. Tkongh they have only 500 names ou taeir roll-book, they have at least eight thousand sympathizers, adherents or proselytes, and are thoroughly organized in every part of the municipality. The So cialists, Anarchists and Communists increase nominally, but not really. Their ranks arc swelled by new arriv als from abroad, and their voting strength by the constant naturaliza tion of foreigners who have been here the length of time required by the law. On the other hand, those who have been prosperous in trade or pro fessional life turn renegade to their former tenets and display :is keen a love for property and its rights as the very men they were wont to denounce in unmeasured terms. Most is now proclaimed a traitor, Schwab a capi talist, Buchanan a turn coat, and Gronlund a hireling. Four years ago this quadrilateral made the chief stars of the Socialistic skies. Now that work is to be at once re sumed on the jetty, and that it is likely that the construction of the electrio-cable road over the hill will soon be commenced, let every effort be put forth to secure a through rail road. Ont from the darkness and gloom of the sleepy, indolent past, let Astoria advance rapidly onward and upward to success. Shake off the inertia which has characterized you, catch from the Ptiget sound cities tho spirit of activity which has made them so successful, and be deter mined that henceforth your motto shall be "Excelsior." Men of Astoria, you can make this a city of 50,000 people in five years if you try. Will yon doit? "Will you make fortunes for yourself and chil dren, or will yon remain in your moss covered shells the balance of yonr list less lives until you pass unheeded, unwept, unhonored and unsung to the quiet sleep of the grave, but little more quiet than has been your lives only a great deal longer? Activity, energy, determination and a united effort on the part of all, will soon lift Astoria out of the gloom, and make her a rich, rapidly growing and popu lous citv. A tt.ui.no u here is absolutely es sential to the growth and prosperity of Astoria, and it must be had at any cost. Other towns and cities with less than half our population and ad vantages are having railroads bnilt to them, and here we have no visible prospect at present The principal expense of a railroad from here must bo borne by Astoriaus or they must donate liberally of their laud. Which will you do, gentlemen? "Which will you give, money or land? Indications now seem favorable that the electric-cable railway project will be successful. It docs indeed seem strange that any sensible person cannot see that tho giviug of part of their land for tho construction of such a line, makes the remainder far more valuable. The subsidy given is not a gift It is only an investment, and a highly profitable one it will prove. Raise the required amouut to-day and let the work or construction com mence at once. Wicked indeed it would be to wish for tbe death o any one of tho few people whose every idea seems to be to prevent the growth and retard the interests of Astoria. One thiug, how ever, might be said, and that is, let lis try and be graciously resigned to the infliction of Providence which i emoves them from our midst, in any way which seemeth best to the will of Him who rules and governs all things on this mundane sphere. SiKQUiiAitiiY enough it now appears that there was not a single pilot on the pilot schooner Governor 2Ioody when she sailed out of hero last Friday. Perhaps some one can explain why the vessel was sent out with no pilots on board, for without them it would do no good for the schooner to crake outside looking for incoming ships. It k a fact which occasioned consid .erable comment yesterday. One of tho revelations of the census k that there are now twenty-seven states with a population of over 1,000 000 each. In 1880 there were nine-tew. NEW TO-DAY A Card. Editok of Astouian : An inquirer iIshes to know by hat au thority the Hon. Board of Mot Commis sioners for the state of Oregon granted the privilege to an almost perfect stranger to the Columbia Iti cr bar. to assume command of the state property called the Oregon Pilot Schooner Gov. 3Ioody. Offers were made to the (principal) commissioner by old and experienced pilots to man said vessel, pro- idlng they could receive the rates estab lished by ihe last legislature of Oregon. The offer was not accepted. Hence the present trouble.
