ASTOBIA. OKEQON:
SUNDAY...
THE PROPHECY FULFILLED.
Tke state pilot scliooner Gov.
Moody is a total -wreck on the
rugged rocks ot North Head.
The Portland Board o Trade aud
the TJ. P. Co. are relieved o the charge
wkkh iras unwelcome to them as an
fflSpHmale child.
They -wanted the pilotage but not
the .schooner.
The original program of carrying
the pilots on" the tugs can now be car
tied out without opposition.
The last vestige of the pilotage serv
ice which was instituted to protect the
commerce of the Columbia is de
stroyed. During January and February, 1S89,
while the notorious "pilot bill'' was
before the Oregon legislature, Tnn
Astokiax opposed the passage ot that
bill with what ability it possessed on
the ground that it was fatal to the ef
fioienoy of the pilot service at the
mouth of the Columbia, and against
every principle of public policy.
The scheme to cut down the wages
of the experienced pilots who bad
earned their invaluable Knowledge
of the winds and currents aud coast in
thia locality by the hardship aud ex
perience of years, was denounced as
au unwise move and one that would
drive the old and tried bar pilots out
of business here.
The Portland papers referred to the
bar pilots as a ring of thieves and ex
tortionists that it was necessary io
break up before pilot charges could be
reduced to a reasonable figure.
It was agreed by all parties that Qq
pilot schooner should be maintained.
Yet the history of the Gov. ZIoody
since the passage of the "pilot bill,"
on, February 15th, '89, has been one of
rapid decline and continued idleness
until this last scene in which the pilot
schooner is sent out to destruction,
mastered by a man who had no knowl
edge of the currents and coasts of this
locality.
The loss of the schooner is a trhial
matter compared with the injury
which this port will suffer by reason
ot the wreck.
Those who are not fully informed as
to the facts will look with suspicion
on a port where is wrecked a vessel
which was maintained to insure the
safety of shipping and which was sup
posed to be manned and officered by the
most experienced and trusty mariners
on the coast.
Shippers will reason that a port
which is unsafe for the pilot schooner
k not safe for commercial shipping.
The injury done to the reputation
of this port by this unfortunate cir
cumstance far exceeds the insignificant
gain from false economy demanded
end obtained by Portland and O. E.
fc N. influence.
The evidence of the master of the
pilot schooner is that he was not ac
quainted with the currents about the
mouth of the Columbia.
The question is, why was a stranger
to these waters given charge of the
pilot schooner ?
Were there no tried and competent
pilots at this port?
Perhaps there has been a saviug of
wages.
The Bvrvice has been injured and
The Astoriak's prophecy has been
fulfilled.
Co-orrsATioK with CoL Taylor by
the owners of large tracts of land on
Young's bay and river would go a
long way towards extending a railroad
towards the "Willamette valley. The
Bay Kailway Company have a
standard gauge hue built into
this city, and a franchise from
the city which is very valuable. It is
a comparatively easy matter to extend
that road around the bay, across
Young's river, thence across the Lewis
aad Clarke and on towards Hillsboro.
Halted effort would push it ahead
rapidly, and inside of two years Asto
ria would have a thorough railway.
Tke year 1892 maybe an unusual
one for celebration of anniversaries.
la 1492 Columbus discovered Amer
ica; in 1592 was discovered Pugot
Bound; in 1792 for the first time came a
Teasel, the Columbia, into our noble
river. So that the year 1892 will be
the rounding to completion of the
century and centuries of three great
events in the world's history.
NliUt all the raUroad-buildiug on
this coast at present is through a new
and comparatively unsettled country,
where the railroad companies had
previously secured the ownership of
large tracts of land. The inference
is plain, and the lesson should be
needed.
SssrozxTS of Astoria are beginning
to realixe the fact stated in these col
um yesterday, that in order to se
cure the construction of a railroad to
-this city they must make powerful ef
forts 8nd give largely in the way of
lend before a road will come here.
