It is one ij of the finest suburbs to Astoria, situated, as it is, at the head 'M of navigation on the Lewis and Clarke river, seven miles from xj Lewisvil Astoria and backed by about fifty settlers. It is the finest, and most fertile valley in Clatsop County. Besides it contains x several logging camps, etc. ASTOKIA. UxxatckaIi indeed seems the "strange message from Ottawa, where a young woman seeks to murder her younger sister and her aged mother. who was helpless and bed-ridden, sim ply to gratify a spirit of revenge. Harbok lines for Astoria are to be ! settled by the eminent officers of the , United States engineer corp3, who J compose the board to decide the mat- ' tor. Col. Mendell, Major Handbury i and Capt. Symons are the officials! who meet to-day in tho rooms of the j Chamber of Commerce. Any and all! citizens interested, who have any sug-1 geslions to offer, should meet with the ( board. Telegkajis from San Francisco ' show that the Pacific Coast Chamber i of Commerce is actively at work on matters of general interest, and from i the stability, energy and well known dotermiued character of the gentlemen i present, there is ever reason io be- i lieve that Uio rusnlt of their delihera- i tit ms will be highly beneficial to the I best "interests of all the stales rep- resented at that gathering. Goxguxbssmict scein to be aroused at last, and having become aware of the pernicious effects of that personifica tion or rascality, tho Louisiana Lot tery, arc doing their best to place npon its nefarious business thctamp of national disapproval. Tho anti lottery bill has passed both branches or Congress aud now awaits the signa ture of President Harrison, which ip sure to be readily given. Hundreds of men have been ruined financially by continued investments in lottery tickets, and if it can be prevented from extending its blighting influence all ovor this broad land, a grand object will have boon altaiucd. A commcxicatiok on the local page from a correspondent contains much that is worthy of consideration re garding the future requirements of this city as to facilities for railroads along its water front. It is evident that if Astoria ever has railroads to ' bring hither tho products of the rich and extensive country to the eastward, ' some provision must be made for de livering freight to the vessels that' shall lie at her wharves. Pcrhap3 j consideration of this matter may not ' be overlooked by members of our chamber of commerce whon discuss ing matters relating to the water frontage of the city. XEWSTATEn men have many and devious ways of acquiring informa tion regarding current events, and no matter how closely parties interested ! may try to keep news to themselves , the average reporter can generally ascertain the facts if he tries. Seldom ' is there a star chamber transaction but what tho reporters gain the par ticulars and publish the news to au expectant public People are clamor ous for every item of a general nature, and demand its publication in the col umns of the daily press, and their de mand is seldom in vain, for the energy, ability and determination of the news paper man is called into requisition so continuously that it almost always results in success.
