ASTOEIA. OREGON:
THURSDAY....
..-SEPTEMBER 18. 1800
Suocessfdii starting of the electric
motor and cable lino tvould be a
grand thing forAjstoria to accomplish.
It can readily be done, and it cer
tainly should not be allowed to fail for
-rant of a little more encouragement.
The editor of the Richmond, (HI.)
Record, besides doing the editorial
work upon three or four weekly sheets,
advertises to do "literary work of
every description, poems written to
suit funeral or wedding or festive oc
casions, addresses and lectures written
to order, manuscripts reviFed
and prepared for publication," etc.
Energy and activity, combined with
liberal ideas, will soon place Astoria
in the front rank, so far as growth and
progress are concerned. We have the
natural advantages, but those alone
are not enough to make a lively city.
There must be active co operation on
the part of merchants and business
men. Arouse from jour lethargic
slumber, and make up jour minds
that the town must grow and it will.
Act more and talk less, and success
will crown your efforts.
The State fair is in progress at
Salem, and hat is Astoria doiug in
reference to it? Are we represented
thoro? If not, why not? The great
exosition will open at Portland on
Thursday, September 25th, and what
part will Astoria take? These aie
questions worthy of an answer. The
man who lives within the narrow
confines of his own town or city,
and pays but little heed to
what is transpiring around him in the
great world, and whose vision is
bounded by the hills which surround
bim, will amount to but little in the
world's history. The same is true of a
town or city. Astoria should be prom
inently represented at the State fair
and the Portland exposition, and if she
is not, some one is to blame. "Who
is it?
Pebhats it would be well for the
Astoria Gas company to adopt the
plan which the gas companies at Bir
mingham, England, are about to try.
That is the "nickel-in-the-slot" plan
for consumers in tenement houses.
This is adopted to force payment in
advance, it being pretty hard work to
collect bills in tenement houses after
the gas is consumed, and it is desira
able that the tenement houses
should bum all the gas they
can pay for. So they will set up
machines in these houses that upon
the dropping of a penny in the slot
will wind off just twenty-five feet of
gas and stop. Not another inch until
another penny is dropped in the slot
"What a saving in gas meters and a
saving in collecting gas bills can be
effected by this method.
The lottery craze is assuming
mammoth proportions, aud oven from
Astoria everj' month a large amount
ot money is sent to Louisiana by par
ties who are hoping they will draw
something in prizes. On this subject
are some "words from the Oroville
Register which aro equally applicable
here and arc as follews: The amount
of money sent out of this
town and this is only one of a thou
sand such to tho Louisiana lottery is
astonishing even to those who know
bo-" fond of gambling the average
man is. Ono resident hero has spent
over S500 in tho past two years buy- j
ing tickets, another has paid out five
dollars a month for nearly six jearsj
nn1 ji lliirl cni1 lnfnlv fliof Un ? I
. . UlUU UWJ UiUV lib 4A4
tended to invest S30 at one time for he
was sure then to obtain something.
Many send away a dollar or two each
month so that the total amount being
sent away from tho town would foot
up into tho thousands each season.
Tho government cannot stop this lot
tery swindle too soon, for only five
per cent, of the money paid in is ever
returned to the people again."
