The new syndicate which has pur chased the land for an immense ship building plant on the Delaware river below Miffin street is one of tho most substantial concerns of the kind ever organized in this country, and the completion of tho works at as early a date as possible is an assured fact. Dho capital stock is $5,000,000, of which tho entire amount has been taken and is as good as paid in. Philadelphia leads in the enterprise, not only in furnishing tho site and the leading men, but of the $5,000,000 subscribed, $2,000,000 is placed in this city, while $1,000,000 has been taken in each of the cities of New York, Boston and London. Tho tract comprises sixty acres, ex tending from the Port "Warden's line back to the old Point house road, or, as it is now known, "Weccacoe avenue, and tho consideration was $300,000 cash, or S5,000 an acre. A payment of $100,000 was made on Wednesday, and at least 500 men will be at work in a few days filling in and preparing the site. That portion of tho work will cost thousands of dollars, and a slight idea of the cost of such work may bo obtained by comparing the price paid for this land and that paid by Claus Spreckels a short distance up the river. The Spreckels land comprises but eight acres, but cost $500,000. The land was all filled in, however, with wharves and other im provements, while nearly the whole of the tract just purchased is covered with water at high tide. Tho Cramps, of the famous Ken sington shipbuilding firm are the nucleus of tho syndicate, and their idea is to transfer all their present works to the now site, while tho Le high Yalley Bailroad Company will in all probability buy the land on which tho Cramps are now situated, as it adjoins tho property recently pur chased by them on tho river front Much of the success of the new en terprise has been due to the efforts of Whorlon Barker, who, besides being largely interested personally in tho syndicate, has had the practical charge of tho finances of the venture, and his recent trip to Europe was to conclude tho final arrangements on tho other side. Matters were in ex cellent shape here, and as soon as Mr. Barker returned the business was brought to a climax .as speedily as the legal forms could bo complied with. The now plant- will be boyond all doubt the shipyard of tho country, if not of the world. One of tho features will be an immense dry dock capable of accommodating tho largest veesels afloat or that may bo designed for years to come. The sito is admirably adapted for shipbuilding because of its location and the depth of tho chan nel, there being thirty feet of water at tho Port "Warden's line nt that point. It is built of wrought steel plates riveted together. The contract was given to the bridge company in November last by W. There are two girders and tho other is now being built Besides these two large girderSj thero aro fivo others of less dimensions, which are to be used on the southeast wing. This ono arrived hero on threo cars via tho Pennsyl vania, Chicago and Northwestern, Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads. It was so arranged on trusses that the weight was evenly distributed over the cars and it rode easily over the entire line. S jFV Journal of Commerce. m . Eoney, hut Good. The strangest fish in tho world is said to bo tho humble herring. He is as common as mud and as cheap as dirt, but he cannot be beaten forflavor; and it is claimed for him that he sup ports more persons than any other creature in the world in the catching, the preserving, tho selling or tho eat ing. Another curious thing is- that ho assumes so many shapes and names, says the New York Times. Catch him in ono place and ho is a bloater; in another, a sodger; in a third, a sprat; and whei.young, ho is taken from the Thame3 and called whitebait, while across the channel in Brittanv. hfifnrn hois more than a couple of inches long, no can be found tinned and la belled in pure olivo oil as a sardine. He i3 a wonderfnl fish, and from the out-and-out genuine ancient and fish like smell during the herring harvest that obtains in tho neighborhood about Amsterdam, it is not ka vpi-v hard to believe that that ancient and highly respectable town is really built, as they say, on herring bones. Farmers often complain of the rales charged by transportation companies, . but it would bo easy to demonstrate that the carriage of farm products by rail and steamer all combined costs mnch less than the hauling of theso products over oormiry roads from the farm to the railway station. Good roads pay by reducing bills for repairs of wagons and carriages, by saving time, economizing horse power and in many other directions. The absolute money value of attractive roads to any country community is just as real and i positive. They give an added valne to every acre of land in the districts which they traverse.
