JOHNffY BULL IS CRITICIZED The Stars and Stripes Were Plying Over the Custom House Building In Montreal Oity. Special by Thk Uhitko Pkks?. Ottawa, Sept 16. One of tho gov ernment organs has come up squarely for separation from England. A Que bec telegram to-day says: "If wo are permitted to gauge current events in Canada, we think that annexation to the "United States is gaining great headway among our people. It is coming, and that before long. Sir John May preaches all sorts of doctrines; he may climb upon Johnny Bull's back and become the last man upon the earth to accept the platform, but dollars and cents will bring it about. The Mc Kinley bill is passed by a large major ity, and that deals a hard blow to tho commerce of Canada. England, we are told, is ready to give up Canada and New Foundland, as Heligoland? "We are positive that at least this part of tho country would bo in a thriving condition if we had America merged into a general federation. How would Brother Jonathan meet us, but with expressions of joy. Property would be carried on which would bring comfort and glory to the masses. A few days ago stars and stripes were raised over the Custom House iu Montreal, and now they are flying over tho grounds of the Toronto exhibition. What is to prevent them being raised over the nation at some future period? Some thing must be done, because we cannot stand this tariff tinkering at Ottawa any longer. This country is. iu plain words, going to old Nick, and if at the next general election reformers do not become awaro of tho situation, wo will bo starved out of existence by tho United States tariff. England is neither mother nor friend to us. "We have flattered her too much and now is tho time when one of her grandchildren is hero that wo should talk as plainly as possible of the situation. If capitalists in Lou don can buy up the great stock com panies of tho United States; if they can place millions of dollars in wild plains of that country; if they are scared to invest a siuglo dollar in Brit ish securities, then let us annex so aa to secure their aid and hand. Sir John ought to feel surprised at the enormous amount of money that Brit ishers are investing in tho United States." The article has caused a de cided sensation here, and government officials state that such treasonable and seditious language should not be overlooked. ; - OVER o F- Goods .-.now .-. -: JL T s- Herman Wise's In Occident Hotel Building.
