m ,. vJSu saAKt.- She gaitt gforiatt. ASTORIA. OREGON: TUESDAY .SEPTEMBER 1C, 1KO Poktiaxd men are endeavoring to secure the organization o a state board of trade, and have invited dele gates from every board of trade and chamber of commorco in the state to meet at Portland on Saturday, Sep tember 27th, to organize such a board. The Astoria Chamber of Commerce will be represented by two delegates. Such an association in California and other states has proved highly benefi. cfcl, and there is no reason why Or egon might not derive many advan tages from a like organization. Exebgetjo men are wanted in the Astoria Chamber of Commerce, and no man who has the welfare of this city at heart should fail to be enrolled as a member of that organization. If nearly all dur business men and prop erty holders were members, the power and influence of the Chamber would be materially increased. In all cities where there has been any considerable progress, the membership of their Board of Trade or Chamber of Com merce is always large. The combined influence of active men in such an or ganization is productive of much good, and any reasonable result can be ac complished. KexDnn, what arc you doing to ad vance the interests of Astoria? This is a plain question, which every man should answer. Smooth it over any way you please, it is nevertheless a lamentable fact that there is not the growth and progress being manifested here which there should be. The cit ies on Puget Sound and in California are forging bteadily onward to wealth and prosperity, while this city, winch has been so favored by nature, is mov ing at a snail's pace. This should not bo. This need not bo tho case. Unity of action, concentration of effort and a hearty determination to succeed would materially change tho condition of affairs. All can help. "What will you do, reader? Astoria alone, without any outside help, could, if her citizens would unite in the matter, raise one million dollars and build fifty miles of railroad bo yond tho present line of tho Astoria and South Coast towards the "Willam ette valley. Having accomplished that much in one year's time, help enough would be given from towns in that direction, to complete the link and connect the road with the South ern Pacific. There is no use saying it could not be done, for it certainly could. To demonstrate if Astoria can afford to give as a subsidy $200, 000 in cash, terminal facilities and sixteen miles of road already con structed, she could surely raise one million dollars to invest in a paying business. If the subsidy could be raised and donated, the other amount ! could be invested. It admits of no denial ' Natural gas has been discovered here and yet most of the people are content to sit with folded hands and make no effort to develop the pros pect, or ascertain for a certainty if it can be found in paj-ing quantities. At last it is being agitated and last evening in the Chamber of Commerce some of tho live men of Astoria made a move looking toward the development of the well to find if gas can be had in abundance. If it can, it will prove of great benefit to all. Several wide-1 awake men are willing to invest from $30 to $100 each in order to sink a well and see if gas can be found. Who are some more live men who are willing to join them in the movement? It is worth spending some money on such a good prospect as was found at Warrenton. Capt Gray, Hon. C. W. Pulton and B. Van Dusen are the committee. NEW TO-DAY. AUCTION SALE. THURSDAY, Sept. 18, '90. Sold on Account of Departure. HOUSEHOLD :-:FUBNITDRE At -id Jefferson street, next to Allen's Taint Shop.
