SEPTEMBER , 1690 Advices received in San Francisco from Alaska continue to show a light pact, as has been previously reported to The AsTOBiAxbyoneof the largest salmon canners on northern waters. Retbesektatiye Herjiaxx has been instmmental in securing the establishment of a new mail route in Oregon, and has presented petitions for other routes. This is not the only matter in which Mr. Hermann has shown his fidelity to the state he so ably represents, and indicates that his faithful work secured his triumphant re-election. It will be seen from the report of progress of the electric railroad that Mr. Sharpstein feels more hopeful regard ing the raising of the subsidy and the successful prosecution of the work. It is to be hoped that the outlook will so improve as to enable the company to secure their franchise at the next meeting of the council and go ahead with the grading before the bad weather of winter sets in and makes it impossible for the company to com ply with the terms of a franchise. ALtFonxiA Republicans last night ftpened the cunpaign for the state election. Col. Markham, the nominee for governor, sjwkc in San Francisco and meetings were held iu forty other cities at the same time. The fi"ht will be close, for Mayor Pond of San Francisco, the Democratic nominee for gubernatorial honors is a very popular man, and the fact that Mark ham favored a division of the state will undoubtedly be used against him, in the northern part of the state. Ykkt wide indeed is the range of subjects to be discussed by the Pa cific Coast Board of Commerce which convenes in San Francisco on Wednesday of this week. Delegates will be present from California, Ore gon and "Washington, many of whom will be able aud eloquent men, and the papers which will be presented will be prepared by men thoroughly familiar with their respective subjects. Such gatherings are sure to be highly beneficial to the whole coast, and will accomplish far more than could be secured by efforts of towns orseparate localities. BOARD OF COMMERCE. A Representative Meeting or the Whole Pacific Coast The annual meeting of the Pacific Coast Board of Commerce will be held at San Francisco on Wednesday, Sep tember 17th, in the hall of the Chamber of Commerce, 431 California street The following questions will be censidered: As to the best methods of extending and increasing the usefulness of this association; subsidizing lines of ves sels between this coast and other ports and countries; upon legislation look ing to proper recognition of silver in the national currency; upon proper provisions to be included in a national bankrupt law; upon proper legislation looking to adequate and systematic improvement of Pacific coast rivers and harbors, including coast defenses; anti-Chinese legislation; interstate commerce legislation, including rail road transportation; subsidizing trans oceanic cablelines; upon a proper plan for a united Pacific coast exhibit at the World's Fair in Chicago. Papers and addresses are invited upon any of the foregoing topics. One of the special features of the occasion will be an address on "Bank ruptcy" by Hon. Jay L. Torrey, of St Louis, author of the Torrey bank ruptcy bill, recently passed in the Lower House of Congress. Senator Stewart, of Nevada, has been invited to address the convention upon the subject of "Irrigation," a subject of vital importance to the whole Pacific Coast Other gentlemen who have consented to address the board are: M. M. Estee, John P. Irish, W. H Hilk and Hugh Craig, of San Fran cisco; E. W. Jones, of Los Angeles; Eugene B. Cushing, of Tacoma; Will iam Kapaa, of Portland, Or., and General John F. Gibbons, recently appointed to the command of the di vision of the Pacific The Astoria Chamber of Commerce will be represented by L W. Case, G. Wingate and J. O. Hanthorn. A very interesting session is anticipated. It is reported that a judge at Troy has declared that the baby carriage is a musance when it runs into law-abiding citizens. The natural sequence followed, and, according to a dispatch from Lapeer to the St Louis Globe-Democrat, both Clam and Butler fell in love with that widow, and she kept them both on the string. Clam called on her the other night and told her how much he loved her and wanted her to change her name. She consented. and the day was named.
